Teaching Tips: The First Day

Fall semester starts in about a week; this is the perfect time to think about what you would like your students to accomplish on the first day and during the first weeks. The first day is one of the most important days of the semester that many faculty use to get to know their students.

This will help you build rapport with your students and create a positive learning environment in your classroom.

This ideas will help you set the tone for the entire semester:

  • The First Day of Class, from DePaul University with suggestions for both in-person and online courses

Flip, formerly Flipgrid, Discontinued

If you use Flip, the video discussion board formerly known as Flipgrid, in your classes, you may be dismayed to find out that it will be folded into Microsoft Teams and no longer available for standalone use. In essence, Flip.com is being dismantled and any videos you might have there will no longer be available to you after September 30th. Here is the timeline:

  • The Flip.com website will become view-only after July 1st.
  • Educators can download existing Flip videos until September 30th, 2024.

As you are gearing up for the start of the semester, you can make an appointment for a 30-min, 60-min, course redesign project, or GenAI consultation:
