Dear Logan Community,
With both gratitude and a heavy heart, I am writing to share the news that Head of School Markus Hunt has decided to step away from The Logan School at the end of his sabbatical this summer. This development came after careful consideration by Markus, and the Board accepted his decision.
In his eight years as Head of School, Markus gracefully oversaw a leadership transition from the school’s founder, Patti McKinnell; he navigated numerous changes as the school evolves yet remains true to the joyful vision of student-centered learning; and he led our community successfully through the unprecedented COVID pandemic. Markus also regularly shared his passion for music and poetry, his finesse with costumes, and his deep love of learning.
This sort of change can be difficult, particularly without the chance to offer a proper farewell. With that in mind, we will welcome the Logan community to come together to celebrate Markus at a farewell event in early Fall. Details will be forthcoming.
I am pleased to share that our Dean Shae Schneider, who has been serving as acting Head of School during Markus’s sabbatical, will remain the acting Head of School until an Interim successor is found.
The Board of Trustees is working quickly to appoint an Interim Head of School to guide Logan throughout the 2022-23 academic year, in collaboration with our experienced senior administrative team. We are fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated group of administrators who already enjoy deep connections with members of our community. The Board commits its utmost collective support of the team as they confidently and seamlessly oversee school operations. Additionally, the Board has already begun the process of hiring a search firm to help the school select a new Head of School, with the goal of a July 1, 2023 start date for this leader. We look forward to benefiting from your input and conducting an inclusive search process.
The Logan School is strong. While this will be an adjustment for us all, the good work of Logan will continue this year. Thank you for your support as we move through these changes together. Should you have questions, please direct them to Board@theloganschool.org.
Again, we thank Markus for all he has given to Logan over the past eight years, and we look forward to charting Logan’s bright future as well.
Respectfully,
Sarah Bridich,
Board Chair

Dear Community,
It’s bittersweet to be saying goodbye to a community that has been central to almost every thought and consideration I have had these past eight years. Yet, after time to reflect during my sabbatical, in consultation with the Board, and ever inspired by the bravery of our students, I am now beginning my “continuation” journey beyond Logan.
At Logan, I’ve learned so much and hope that I have left more than I have taken; or as I’ve often heard teachers say when entering a wilderness, “let’s make it better than we found it.” Together we have designed and built Logan Works, our playground, and our library. In this last year, we were finally able to share meals together after a long but necessary time apart. Yet regardless of what Logan has done or yet to do, we recognized and held fast to the truth that the students are the story. Their “voice and choice” continued to serve as the road map for their educational journeys. The adults in their community were there to guide them and resisted the urge to save them. Although sometimes messy in the process, finding comfort in ambiguity is the hallmark of a Logan education—and the end justifies the means. Logan produces the most capable, confident, and thoughtful students I have ever witnessed. For my part, I will be rekindling my passion for the arts and continuing my calling to champion equity and social justice. If there was ever a time for me to answer the call, this is it.
Looking back on my interview, when I first started learning about Logan, I recall the special conversation I had with Patti McKinnell, Logan’s founder. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was sitting in front of one of the finest minds in progressive education and that she had created a school beyond my wildest dreams. And at the end of our interview, when we had run out of words, although we had just met, we ended the conversation with a hug. Of course, this was not an interview tip I had ever read, but there was simply no other way for us to have expressed what I believe was the mutual respect we had for each other and for an education that put students first—in a world of education driven by pursuit of empty achievement and ultimately fear. The world is a better place because there is The Logan School for Creative Learning.
As my tenure at Logan comes to a close, I am thankful for everyone in the Logan community. I am thankful for the support of the Board and families. I am grateful to the administrative team and teachers. I am thankful for the broader community that supports unit field trips—individuals who are paid for their interview time with the satisfaction that they have inspired a young and curious mind. And I am in awe and ever-changed by those young, curious minds. I am looking forward to hearing about Logan’s future successes and have every confidence that Logan is prepared for future challenges and will continue to evolve in meaningful ways—and always in service to the students. My family and I will miss Logan, and it will always be in our hearts.
With gratitude,
Markus
