Would you like to attend the PSIA-AASI National Academy April 12-17, 2026 at Copper Mountain?

PSIA National Academy is an annual gathering of the country’s best ski instructors from across the United States. Founded more than 50 years ago, it is PSIA-AASI’s longest-running event and is an opportunity to ski big terrain in a supportive environment, learn from and network with your peers both on- and off-mountain, stay up on innovations shaping our industry, grow your community, demo new equipment, and get inspired. National Academy offers groups for Alpine, Snowboard, Adaptive, Cross Country and Telemark.

To register for National Academy and for more information please click here.

We have three scholarships available, made possible through the generosity of Kent and Vicki Logan, these scholarships support professional growth by covering the National Academy registration, hotel accommodations, and banquet. This season, Copper Mountain will host National Academy, where the PSIA-AASI National Team will work directly with participants to address individual development needs while sharing the vision and messaging they will take to the world at Interski Vail 2027. If you’re interested in being considered for one of these coveted scholarships, please fill out this form.

The Professional Pivot Record Low Snow, High Level Pros

 By Melissa Marotto

This is the winter that thins the terrain but sharpens the pros. The season that efficiently and without apology separates instructors from true professionals. A time when we are teaching high-paying guests between the dirt and a hard place, something none of us imagined when we earned our pins in the Rocky Mountain region.

This has been one of the least cooperative snow years on record. The long-standing hierarchy of seniority and certification has compacted into a narrow battlefield where rookies and veterans now compete gracefully, diplomatically, and occasionally begrudgingly for the same work.

Beyond the Rockies, small mountains have honed the craft of teaching on limited terrain for generations. It is one of the industry’s understated truths. The West has rarely had to learn this lesson, although in many regions this has always been the work.

When winter gives less and guests expect more, we pivot.

Whether on skis or a snowboard, this season forces every snow pro to turn around their axis. Sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively, and sometimes both at once. With a fall line as unforgiving as it has been this season, gravity is no longer the trusty teaching assistant it once was. We turn in place and lead with skill because there is no other choice.

This season laughs at the old mantra “Never teach a new skill on new terrain.”

We could not teach on new terrain if we tried. There is none.

We are gamifying garlands.

Leapfrogging with falling leaf.

Hunting for pockets of snow that are not flow zones in an otherwise bottlenecked mountain experience.

The romance of instructing fades when the teaching environment shrinks and guest expectations expand. What remains, the heart of great teaching grounded in foundational skills and emotional engagement, becomes the universal test. It is a test every lasting pro eventually faces.

Those who make a true professional pivot by treating this season as a structured learning opportunity, developing measurable skills in movement analysis, risk management, and adaptability, will walk into next winter with a deeper skill set than any elective clinic could offer.

There may be less snow underfoot, but our guests will not receive less from us. It might not always be pretty, but it will always be professional.

Weekly Knowledge Nuggets

In this section you will find...

  • Technical Skills
  • Snowboard Fundamentals
  • Alpine Fundamentals

Technical Skills:

Technical skills bring teaching concepts to life with practical applications adapted to the student’s ability level or desired outcome. These skills relate to the instructor’s understanding of fundamental snowboarding and skiing mechanics and applying that understanding in lessons. Technical skills represent the ability to perform, understand, and explain the sport. In sharing technical skills, the instructor communicates certain discipline-specific aspects of movement and gives accurate demonstrations.

AASI Snowboarding Fundamentals:

  • Control the relationship of the center of mass (CM) to the base of support to direct pressure along the length of the board.
  • Control the relationship of the center of mass (CM) to the base of support to direct pressure across the width of the board.
  • Control the magnitude of pressure created through the board/surface interaction.
  • Control the board’s pivot through flexion/extension and rotation of the body.
  • Control the board’s tilt through a combination of inclination and angulation.
  • Control the twist (torsional flex) of the board using flexion/extension and rotation of the body.

PSIA Alpine Fundamentals:

  • Control the relationship of the center of mass to the base of support to direct pressure along the length of the skis.
  • Control pressure from ski to ski and direct pressure toward the outside ski.
  • Control edge angles through a combination of inclination and angulation.
  • Control the skis’ rotation with leg rotation, separate from the upper body.
  • Regulate the magnitude of pressure created through ski/snow interaction.
