An international outbreak of the rare Andes hantavirus, which can cause severe respiratory illness with a high fatality rate and limited person-to-person transmission, has been linked to cruise ship MV Hondius passengers, who have now been evacuated to multiple countries, including the United States. As the epidemiological investigation continues, epidemiologist Katrine Wallace, an adjunct assistant professor in the UIC School of Public Health, is available to discuss what hantavirus is, how it spreads, why the Andes strain is unique, what the public should and should not be concerned about as the outbreak investigation continues, and how misinformation and conspiracy theories about hantavirus are spreading online during the outbreak response.
