Alderman Received Award for Distinguished Service to Geographic Education

The National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) awarded Derek Alderman, professor of geography, the George J. Miller Award, its highest honor. Read more about Alderman’s award.

Hix Elected American Physical Society Fellow

William Hix, a UT-ORNL joint faculty professor, has been elected for his "contributions to understanding explosive thermonuclear burning and nucleosynthesis, particularly in contexts like supernovae.” Read more about his research.

NEWS & NOTEWORTHY

The Xue Research Group in the Department of Chemistry, led by Professor Ziling (Ben) Xue whose work includes materials chemistry and the study of magnetism, published their recent work in the journal Nature Communications.
Wieteke A. Holthuijzen, a doctoral student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, is first author on a new research study in PLOS on the diets of house mice and their conservation threat on islands. 
Deadric Williams, associate professor in the Department of Sociology, is the invited keynote speaker for the University of Buffalo Department of Surgery’s 2024 Beyond the Knife Lecture in Social Justice and Health Equity. 
Gino Castellanos, an MFA student of printmaking in the School of Art won Best in Show at Arts in The Airport for his woodcut Pilgrim.

The CAS Care Bears made their Halloween debut this year. Members of the college HR team dressed as Care Bears and delivered treats to various departments across campus. Up in Ayres Hall for Homecoming, administrative staff dressed for the "No Place Like Neyland" theme.

Remembering Professor Wheeler
