Top Five Things to Know

From the Office of Provost Peggy Agouris

OFFICE OF THE PROVOST
WEEKLY MESSAGE ARCHIVE

Dear colleagues,

It is always gratifying to experience the building energy on campus during the first week of the academic year, as students dive into their classes, our sports teams get ready for a new season, and clubs and activities reconvene for another semester of fun and collaboration.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:

  1. I encourage you to be proactive with communicating GenAI policies within your courses. Instructor GenAI Policy Communication Guidelines from STLI provide step-by-step instructions as well as models of syllabus statements that can be adopted or adapted by individual instructors. You can also schedule a consultation with STLI for additional information about crafting a GenAI policy.

  2. The Office of the President and Office of the Provost are offering a limited number of grants for signature events that focus on at least one of the four Vision 2026 Cornerstone Initiatives of Data, Water, Democracy, and Careers. Review the application process and take note of the first upcoming deadline on September 30.

  3. Research Security Training (RST) is now mandatory under Sec. 10634 of the CHIPS & Science Act. Anyone making a substantial professional contribution to federally sponsored research must complete RST within 12 months prior to submitting a federal proposal. RST is available on Cornerstone as a 1-hour module. Please reach out to the Office of Sponsored Programs with any questions.

  4. Please encourage any undergraduate students who might be interested to present their research projects at the Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium. The deadline to register is this Sunday, September 7.

  5. This week’s shoutout goes to the incredible team behind the Opening Convocation ceremony. It continues to be one of my absolute favorite occasions of the year. Thank you for coming together to create such a powerful experience for our newest class of students.

I enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with many of you during last week’s Convocation, Fall Faculty Meeting, and other welcome events. There is already significant work underway across our academic community, and I am grateful for your enthusiasm and expertise as we kick off what promises to be a productive semester for W&M.
