This issue highlights the remarkable people who make the USC Roski Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology such a dynamic community. We are pleased to welcome new faculty members, residents and interns, whose talents and perspectives will strengthen our clinical, research and educational missions.

We also celebrate the achievements of colleagues who are advancing innovative treatments, providing compassionate care, sharing their expertise on the national stage and inspiring future eye care professionals. Their contributions reflect the commitment to excellence and service that defines our department.

American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2026 schedule for the USC Roski Eye Institute 

The USC Roski Eye Institute will be represented by clinical and research faculty at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2026 meeting, which will take place in New Orleans from October 9–12. Topics span all subspecialties of ophthalmology.

Inspiring the next generation of eye care professionals

The USC Roski Eye Institute recently hosted the 4th annual “Eye Care for All: An Introduction to a Career in Eye Care” program at the USC Health Sciences Campus. This one-day program gave USC undergraduate students an inside look at careers in optometry, ophthalmology, and vision research.

FACULTY HONORS

USC Roski Eye Institute faculty inducted into Retina Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Linda A. Lam, MD, MBA, professor of clinical ophthalmology, vice chair of Satellite Clinical Affairs and medical director of USC Roski Eye Institute Arcadia, and Andrew A. Moshfeghi, MD, MBA, associate professor of clinical ophthalmology, medical director of the USC Roski Eye Institute and vice chair for clinical affairs in the ophthalmology department, on their induction into the Retina Hall of Fame. The 20 internationally recognized 2025–26 honorees were selected through peer nomination for their research, clinical excellence and lasting contributions to treating retinal disease.

Grateful patient honors J. Martin Heur, MD, PhD, in Al Enteshar newspaper

A recent issue of Al Enteshar newspaper features a full-page “Appreciation & Gratitude” ad from patient Fatmeh Atieh Bakhit recognizing J. Martin Heur, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine, for the successful corneal transplant surgery he performed and the compassionate care he provided. The ad also thanks the care teams at Keck Medicine of USC and the USC Roski Eye Institute for their expertise and support throughout her treatment, highlighting the impact of USC’s ophthalmology specialists in restoring patients’ vision and quality of life.

USC researcher Longwei Liu uses ultrasound and genetic engineering to develop targeted treatments for blindness and other diseases

Liu aims to create cures that remotely trigger cell and gene therapies for conditions ranging from a genetic disorder that can rob infants of their vision to cancer.
