The legislature is not officially in session tomorrow.  The day is set for committees to wrap up their work before Crossover Day, which is Thursday.  Crossover Day is the final day for legislation to pass the chamber of its origination before it can be considered further.

House passes school safety bill


The state House of Representatives this afternoon passed HB 268, a massive 63-page bill that addresses the physical safety of students and teachers at school and student mental health issues.  The vote was 159-13.

House education bills passed today


A bill, HB 37, to require school districts to provide notice to educators of the retirement options available to them, passed the House today 169-2.  The sponsor is Rep. Rob Leverett of Elberton.

The House passed HB 225 to ban red-light and speed detection cameras from school zones, 129-37.  The House then took up HB 651 to warn drivers of speed camera by flashing lights and traffic signs that they are entering a school zone that uses speed detection camera, which passed 164-8.

Senate passed education-related bills


The state Senate today passed SB 126, 50-1, that would add a minimum age requirement to qualify as a dropout and reduce the age for individuals to be eligible for enrollment in "completion special schools."

SB 63 passed the state Senate, 53-0, to require local school systems to offer PSAT, SAT, PreACT, ACT, or an advanced placement exam to any home-schooled student residing in the school system.  It would also require a public notice of the exam's date to be posted on the system's website.

SB 124, which could qualify any student whose parent is an active duty military service member stationed in Georgia for a taxpayer-funded, $6,500 private school voucher, passed the state Senate, 37-16.
