Many non-Native organizations and educational institutions have adopted the practice of acknowledging the Indigenous nations on whose land they are based. In this blog post, Dr. Haley Shea explores why some organizations have adopted land acknowledgments and identifies some potential pitfalls groups fall into when starting. Haley concludes the post by walking readers through key steps for developing a quality acknowledgment and suggestions for critically engaging with resources that inform this work.

Myaamia Education Office Updates

Beginning in 2017, the Myaamia Center has partnered with Miami University’s Art Education students to develop and deliver lessons about the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and our art forms. Today, the collaboration has expanded to include all 4th graders in the Talawanda School District and all 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at Fairview-Clifton German Language School in Cincinnati. This fall 460 elementary students will have experienced these lessons!

This month the Myaamia Heritage students were invited to make silver ball and cone earrings with Myaamia artist, Megan Sekulich. A group of about 15 students gathered to learn how to shape cones, connect them to a bead using jewelry wire, and attach the entire piece to a stud or hoop earring. This first workshop of the academic year was a success and we’re looking forward to hosting more of these opportunities throughout the year!
