School-Age Food Allergies: What Parents Should Know

As families prepare for the start of the school year, those whose kids have food allergies need to take extra steps to ensure their safety. Every child with a food allergy should have an emergency care plan that outlines recommended treatment in case of an allergic reaction and includes emergency contact information. Keep your plan in a place where others can find it, and make sure you and others understand what to do in case of an emergency.

| What advice should new college students follow to avoid gaining the “Freshmen 15?”
Gaining weight, often called the Freshman 15, isn’t inevitable if students are thoughtful in their food and exercise choices. “Getting started with a healthy college diet should start even before a freshman college student goes off to school,” says Natasha Ferguson, MD, primary care physician at Highland Medical, Pearl River Medical Associates.
