Keep It Up, Skokie: Active Rat Control Cases Trending Downward
|
At last week’s Village Board meeting, the Skokie Health and Human Services Department provided an update on the Village’s rat control efforts.
The headline: Active rat control cases are trending downward since peaking in February 2024, but it will take a sustained community-wide effort to continue making progress.
|
What’s worked: The Village has added internal and contractual resources, enhanced public education, and taken a coordinated, multi-department approach to rat control.
What’s happening this month: It’s “Ratober” – at least in the Village’s Building and Inspection Services Division. Village staff will be conducting seasonal property inspections focused on rat hot spot areas, prioritizing conditions that contribute to rat activity, and identifying burrows for treatment.
What you can do: Your partnership is essential to achieving a rat-free Skokie.
|
- Report rat activity promptly. Don’t let a small issue grow into a big problem.
- Eliminate sources of food, such as bird seed, pet waste, grill residue, exposed compost and overflowing trash.
-
Eliminate sources of water, such as pet bowls, outdoor toys and containers.
- Maintain vegetation. Overgrown weeds, grass and shrubs – especially along foundations – make it easy for rats to travel unseen.
- Remove sources of shelter. Clear clutter, wood piles and other bulk items and debris from your property.
|
Spread the word: Share this message with your neighbors. Make your property – and your block – inhospitable to rats.
