BNIM’s 2030 Commitment: Three Years Running
|
This Earth Day, BNIM is proud to report that for the third consecutive year, our portfolio of projects in design has met the AIA 2030 Challenge!
Across over 2.1 million square feet of global and regional projects in 2025, we achieved an approximately 93.5% reduction in predicted energy use compared to the CBECS 2003 baseline, exceeding the current 2030 Challenge milestone of 90%.
These results reflect sustained attention to building envelope performance, high-performing HVAC systems, and on-site and procured renewable energy. Together, these strategies continue to move our portfolio toward net-zero energy by, or before, 2030.

Happy Earth Day from the Heartland
|
Kansas City’s Heart Forest, the world’s largest heart-shaped forest of nearly 2,000 trees planted in 1990, has been undergoing a restoration initiative led by the Foundation for Regeneration. Located near the Kansas City International Airport, the Heart Forest can be spotted by visitors flying above as a welcome greeting from the Heartland.
Over the last three decades, the tree saplings have grown to be 50 feet tall and to produce approximately 24 tons of oxygen annually. Today, restoration efforts are helping to revive the forest’s heart shape and expand opportunities to welcome visitors.
Bob Berkebile, BNIM founding principal and co-founder of the Foundation for Regeneration, Brian Weinberg, director of the Foundation for Regeneration, and Ryan Evans, BNIM engineering consultant and Heart Forest project manager, have played an integral role in organizing restoration efforts.

The Kansas City Cultural EcoDistrict: A Framework for Protecting Culture for Future Generations
|
To communicate and preserve culture and knowledge for future generations. This is the guiding 'North Star' statement of the Kansas City Cultural EcoDistrict, a first-of-its-kind effort to help the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Linda Hall Library, two of Kansas City's most significant arts and cultural institutions, prepare for future resilience, together.
Now available as an online resource to peer institutions, the Kansas City Cultural EcoDistrict demonstrates how shared measurement, coordinated planning, and a proactive approach can help advance institutions' missions for decades to come.
