Hello!
As we celebrate the beginning of summer, we also look toward the fall semester and the excitement that returns with it. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves — there’s a lot of summer to enjoy between now and August! East Lansing looks and feels different without most of our Spartans, but those here are still having fun and experiencing the city in its more subdued state. Keep reading to learn why you may want to visit, even if your student isn’t here!
If you are a planner, you may already be wondering about fall and spring dates and deadlines, residence hall and dining closures, breaks for fall, winter, and spring, etc. We have just what you need! As a fundraiser for Spartan Family Connections, we are selling this adorable calendar, featuring the infamous Spartan squirrels and important dates and information. Proceeds of the sale will fund programming and events specifically for you — the supportive family of our Spartan students. The presale is open until Thursday, June 8, so be sure to order yours today! They will be shipped to arrive early July. No promises that they will be available for purchase in August, so be sure to buy now! (And while you’re online at Spartan Spirit Shops, get your swag to proudly show support for your student with a mom, dad, or grandparent shirt, or even create your own!)
In the meantime, we wish you sunny skies, warm breezes and ice-cold beverages. As we tell the students, use this time to rest, relax and rejuvenate, and know we’re here for you when you need us.
Take good care,
Laurin

Orientation and Spartan Cards
Do you have a student headed to MSU for the first time? New undergraduate students should have completed their New Student Orientation modules in D2L and should be moving toward their academic advising appointment. New graduate and professional students may be hearing from their programs or mentors about their own onboarding to campus. All incoming students at all levels will need a Spartan Card (also known as MSU ID), and, beginning June 1, incoming summer and fall 2023 students may go to the MSU ID Office to obtain that card. A valid state or federally issued photo ID is needed to obtain a Spartan Card, so be sure they bring that with them to the ID Office. Incoming students will also receive information on how to upload a photo to have their Spartan Card preprinted and ready for pickup upon arrival to campus. More information to come!

Orange Cone Season
As is a normal occurrence in many parts of the country, summer months bring road construction projects. MSU and the Lansing area are no different. It’s orange-cone season! There is a large project on campus that began May 2023, the Farm Lane Bridge Reconstruction, which will last into 2024. The bridge and adjacent road intersections at both Auditorium Road and North Shaw Lane are closed throughout summer semester 2023 as well as spring and part of summer semester 2024. Find out more about that and other campus projects with detours by visiting the Infrastructure, Planning, and Facilities Closures and Detours map.
Significant road construction is also occurring on US-127 and I-496 in the Lansing and East Lansing areas. The US-127 Corridor Project will increase safety and mobility and is scheduled over the next several years, until 2026. The I-496 Rebuilding Project began spring 2021 and is estimated to be completed fall 2023. While not as large an impact to student and family travel to and from campus, we still want you to be aware of its work.
To ensure the safety of road workers and road users, always slow down, follow all posted signs, and be alert. Work zone safety is everyone’s responsibility!

Fall 2023 Billing
We are starting to get questions on when students and families can expect to see the fall semester tuition bill and when those payments are due. That information is always available on the MSU Controller’s Bill Pay webpage. Fall 2023 bills will be available to students and their guests with access Aug. 5, and the first payment is due Aug. 25. Find other related student account information, including payment plans, refund information and frequently asked questions at the MSU Controller’s Student Accounts webpage.

Off-campus Student Dining Plan Promotion
If your student is planning to live off campus in the coming year, this is an excellent time to purchase an off-campus dining plan and lock in current prices before rates increase!
From now until July 31, students living off campus can lock into the current Silver, Gold or Platinum rate and keep that rate as long as they continue to purchase every fall and spring semester while they are a student at MSU! By purchasing one of the all-you-care-to-eat dining plans during this promotional period, students receive a fixed price with no need to worry about future price increases. They'll have unlimited access to dining halls during open hours, Combo-X-Changes (12 per week!) including Starbucks, and mobile ordering! For complete details, see eatatstate.msu.edu/buyahead.

Mental Well-being
We have heard that some students are now beginning to process the trauma experienced this past spring since returning to familiar environments. We would like to remind families that crisis support remains available through CAPS, Center for Survivors and Safe Place should your student want to process or talk with MSU professional staff. For students in Michigan (due to licensing regulations), virtual appointments are available through:
Health and well-being departments remain open throughout the summer, and students are welcome to schedule medical office visits; seek support from the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, CAPS, Center for Survivors, and Safe Place; get health and well-being resources and education from Health Promotion and more.
