The year was 1989 when BNIM, alongside a group of fellow Kansas City-based architects, presented Critical Planet Rescue (CPR) at the AIA National Convention. It was a pivotal call to action for architects everywhere, challenging perspectives on design excellence and underscoring the responsibility of architects and designers for the future of our planet.
Since formation of AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE), our profession has moved toward a new definition and AIA Framework for Design Excellence that embraces not just beauty, but a vision for zero-carbon, healthy, just, resilient, and equitable built environments.
In honor of Earth Day this month, Joyce Raybuck, BNIM Principal who serves on the AIA COTE Leadership Group, authored an overview of the legacy and continuing work of AIA COTE focusing on:
- Redefining Design Excellence
- Increasing Engagement
- Pushing the Leading Edge of Sustainability
- Educating Students
- Resources and Tools
- Growth of an Archive
- Expanded Knowledge Base
- Influence on Policy and Regulation

Progress on the Path to the 2030 Challenge
The 2030 Challenge sets ambitious industry targets for reducing energy consumption from new buildings, with the goal of designing operationally carbon-neutral buildings by 2030, and embodied carbon-neutral buildings by 2040. In 2023, BNIM further refined our energy modeling capabilities and passive design strategies to meet these challenging benchmarks.
Our practices helped achieve a net 90% reduction in energy from baseline across our 10 million gross square feet of reported 2023 portfolio of projects.
In our latest blog post, James Baker, BNIM Associate, and Jeremy Knoll, Director of Sustainability and Regenerative Design, share details of BNIM's progress on the path to the 2030 Challenge, key case studies of our sustainability plan in practice, and funding for sustainability solutions.

BNIM had the privilege of welcoming Maria Pineda, principal architect and founder of Cota Estudio de Arquitectura, to Kansas City for four weeks in March and April as part of the Young Leaders of Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellowship Program. As a fellow of the YLAI, Maria joined BNIM’s office in Kansas City, where she met with design teams across the firm, collaborating and sharing project experiences to learn from each other and exchange ideas and perspectives on the practice of design.
