JUNE 2026

BRIDGE TRAFFIC AND TRANSIT RIDERSHIP UPDATE

Travel in the Golden Gate Corridor by Bridge, Bus, and Ferry remains well below pre-pandemic levels. Thankfully, overall travel in the Golden Gate Corridor continues to trend upward despite a slower month in May.
In May 2026, southbound Bridge traffic was about 1 percent below May 2025 traffic, Bus ridership was 5% below May 2025 ridership, and Ferry ridership was 18 percent above May 2025 ridership.
Today, during the morning southbound commute, Bridge traffic is still down about 25% compared to pre-pandemic traffic. Less Bridge traffic results in less toll funding available to operate the District’s bus and ferry service. Accordingly, staff are focused on reducing costs while providing first-class service for travelers in the Golden Gate Corridor.
May 2026 traffic and transit ridership statistics are below:

JULY 4 GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE FIREWORKS SHOW

On Saturday, July 4, 2026, San Francisco will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s signing with a historic fireworks display launched directly from the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge — only the third time in the Bridge’s nearly 90-year history that fireworks have been deployed from the iconic span. The free, public display will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and will be visible from vantage points across San Francisco and the Bay Area.
The Golden Gate Bridge will be fully closed to all traffic from 9 pm to 10 pm on the evening of July 4 for the display, with Caltrans highway detours beginning at 8 p.m. The east sidewalk will also be partially closed in the days leading up to and during the display. Additionally, all parking lots at the Bridge will be closed on Saturday, July 4 from 11:00am until the conclusion of the show at 10:00pm.
Saturday, July 4 will be a very busy day at the Bridge, with many staff working to make the event successful for the community. Only employees who are working at the Bridge that day are allowed to park in the District’s parking lots. There are no exceptions, and this parking restriction will be enforced.

REMINDER: JULY 1 TOLL AND TRANSIT FARE INCREASES

Golden Gate Bridge tolls and Golden Gate Ferry and Transit fares will increase on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The increases are part of the District's five-year toll and transit fare programs.
Golden Gate Bridge tolls will increase by $0.50 for most customers, and most regional Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry transit fares will increase by $0.25. Discount transit fare programs will remain in effect for Clipper users, seniors, youth, persons with disabilities, and low-income riders who participate in the Clipper START program. Marin local bus fares and special event ferry fares will not increase.
The revenue generated through the toll and transit fare increases will allow the District to provide ongoing maintenance of the Golden Gate Bridge and continue Golden Gate bus and ferry transit service.

BOARD APPROVES FY 26/27 BUDGET

At their June meeting, the District Board of Directors adopted the Fiscal Year 26/27 budget. The budget is a policy document that identifies the District's strategic direction and priorities for the fiscal year and is the implementation tool for the Board’s policy directions and initiatives.
The FY 26/27 budget projects a shortfall of approximately $34 million, primarily due to lower toll and fare revenue from less post-pandemic travel in the Golden Gate Corridor. The proposed budget assumes a minor increase in Bridge traffic and transit ridership, but District reserves will be required to balance the budget.
