University of Vermont Names Richard L. Page, M.D., Inaugural Chief Medical Affairs Officer |
The University of Vermont has named Larner College of Medicine Dean Richard L. Page, M.D., as its inaugural Chief Medical Affairs Officer. While continuing to serve as dean, he will aid the university in sustaining and strengthening both collaboration with the University of Vermont Health Network and engagement with medical affairs, public health, and health care reform at the local, state, and national levels.

The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont is over the moon with this week's big announcement: Imelda Muller, M.D., Larner Class of 2017, has been selected for NASA’s 2025 class of astronaut candidates—one of just 10 chosen from more than 8,000 applicants nationwide. From the Queen City to Space City and beyond, our medical students have the right stuff.

| Women’s Health & Cancer Conference |
More than 600 participants gathered in person and online to explore innovations in oncology, patient advocacy, and survivorship at the University of Vermont Cancer Center’s 28th Annual Women’s Health and Cancer Conference on September 19. This year’s theme, “The Leading Edge of Cancer Care,” reflected the rapid evolution of cancer research, treatment, and support systems.

| Larner Community Celebrates Pride |
Students, faculty, staff, and colleagues from the UVM Larner College of Medicine, UVM Cancer Center, and College of Nursing and Health Sciences, along with UVM Health Network partners, united for the annual Pride Vermont Parade & Festival on September 7. The groups jointly hosted resource tables, health screenings, and access to preventive care and vaccinations.

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Through the Area Health Education Centers program office at UVM and the MedMentors Student Interest Group (SIG), Larner medical students provide mentoring and medical education opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in health care. In addition to one-on-one matching between medical students and pre-health students, the MedMentors SIG offers discussion panels and skills clinics.

Ashley Volaric, M.D. (pictured at left, left), assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, and Noah Kolb, M.D. (pictured at left, right), professor of neurological sciences, both UVM Cancer Center members, have received the UVM Health Network’s Clinical Care Innovation and Research Award. Volaric researches Epstein-Barr virus; Kolb studies how patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) use speech devices.

UVM Cancer Center member Brian Cunniff, Ph.D., Larner assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, has been appointed an Honorary Visiting Fellow in the Department of Genetics, Genomics, and Cancer Sciences at the University of Leicester, England, in recognition of his collaborative research with Professor Dean Fennell, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., the world’s leading expert in mesothelioma.

Larner Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Heidi Schumacher, M.D., a University of Vermont Health Network pediatrician and a member of the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program team, was featured on the September 9 episode of UVM Extension’s Across the Fence TV program discussing the health impacts of chronic absenteeism. Across the Fence airs weekdays at 12:15 p.m. on WCAX-TV Channel 3.

Larner Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Elias Klemperer, Ph.D., was recently featured on the University of Oxford’s Let’s Talk E-Cigarettes podcast. He discussed new evidence in e-cigarette research and his recent randomized trial of nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, which found that NRT was effective in promoting early smoking cessation among young adult dual users.
