Chancellor’s Opening Celebration kicks off 2024-25 year |
Chancellor Corey A. King invites you to start the new academic year with Warhawk pride. Recognize faculty and staff members, enjoy the company of colleagues and friends, and learn key university updates this Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. in Young Auditorium. A campus cookout will immediately follow in the James R. Connor University Center Hamilton Room.

With three days of programming for first-year students and transfer students, we roll out the purple carpet during Warhawk Welcome this Saturday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 2. The slate of events begins Saturday with the official opening of residence halls and concludes Monday night with the thrilling RU Purple run-out at Perkins Stadium.

Hannah Smith, a communication major from Henrico, Virginia, was recognized onstage by tennis legend Serena Williams at the 2024 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles after winning the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award for her efforts to create opportunities for athletes with disabilities in the Richmond, Virginia, area.

| UW-Whitewater students Itzuri Contreras, an international business major from Manzanillo, Mexico, and Stephanie Hensel, an accounting and international business major from Oconto Falls, were among 150 students worldwide who were selected to compete at the X-Culture Global Business Week 2024, which was held July 7-13 in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Matt Scolan, a finance major from Downers Grove, Illinois, was named the 2024 Academic All-American of the Year by the College Sports Communicators for NCAA Division III baseball. The Warhawk baseball outfielder is the fourth Academic All-American of the Year in school history.

Kudos to Lauren Zepp, assistant professor of special education, who was selected to represent Wisconsin at the 2024 CEEDAR Cross State Convening on May 14-16 in Baltimore, Maryland. During this event, representatives from more than 20 states worked collaboratively to ensure every student receives an equitable opportunity to achieve. Read more about Lauren »
Kudos to Jenna Cushing-Leubner, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, who presented a poster at the AmeriCorps Seniors 2024 Convening on July 30-Aug. 1. Her presentation included information about how long-term investments in infrastructure for Hmong community decision-making and collective actions shows positive impacts to workforce development, K-12 student success, teacher retention, language reclamation, and mental health. UW-Whitewater’s Fiscal and Economic Research Center (FERC) was highlighted in a Green Bay Press Gazette article after conducting a study on the potential economic impact of broadband access in Door County. FERC is supported by the College of Business and Economics and directed by Russell Kashian, professor of economics.

Keri Carollo, head women’s basketball coach and senior woman administrator, has worked as a leader in the department of intercollegiate athletics for more than 20 years. Carollo was recently named among the Milwaukee BizTimes’ Notable Women in Sports, a recognition of women in southeastern Wisconsin who’ve made significant contributions to their sport, including leadership outside of their organizations and mentorship of other women in the profession. Nick Hwang, associate professor of communication, presented “MoNoDec: The Mobile Node Controller for audience-involved sound diffusion” at the International Computer Music Conference at Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea. He and his co-author, Anthony Marasco, received the honor of the conference’s best paper, and an extended version of the paper will be published in the Computer Music Journal (MIT Press). Professor Hwang is pictured with John Chowning, the developer of FM synthesis, a very important algorithm used in electronic instruments.
