We’ve spent the last several weeks wrapping up on-campus programs as we transition into neepinwiki ‘summer.’ On May 4, 2024, we welcomed 328 attendees to the 10th biennial Myaamiaki Conference. While most attendees were Myaamia citizens and Miami University staff, faculty, or students, several representatives from other tribal nations, universities, and learning institutions were also in attendance to learn about our ongoing work. Recordings of all conference presentations are now available on YouTube.

As we shift attention toward community programs, the newsletter will go on a summer hiatus while our staff travel to Miami, OK, and Fort Wayne, IN. We will return in August as we welcome a new cohort of Myaamia Heritage students to campus.

Myaamia people have been gathering to sing and dance together for generations. This year, one dance we’ll learn about in our Eemamwiciki Summer Programs is stomp dance. You can learn more about stomp dancing in our community from Dr. Cameron Shriver on Aacimotaatiiyankwi.

Myaamia Education Office Updates

Now that we’re halfway through Wiihkoowia Kiilhswa 'Whippoorwill Moon,’ the Education Office is starting preparations for Eemamwiciki Summer Programs. This year our theme is Weecinaakiiyankwi Weecikaayanki ‘We Sing Together–We Dance Together.’ Participants in Saakaciweeta (6-9 year olds), Eewansaapita (10-16), Maayaahkweeta (17-18), and Neehsapita (18+) will explore and experience various forms of song and dance practiced by our community.

The end of the semester is always a busy time for students in the Myaamia Heritage Program. For their final projects in the Heritage Course, students created a t-shirt design based on what they have learned about sovereignty and imagery throughout the semester. Students will vote on their favorite to be printed for all the students in the class.

This year we have 11 undergraduate students graduating from the Myaamia Heritage Program. On Saturday, May 18, we celebrated with them and their families. Graduates of the program are gifted with a special t-shirt, a lacrosse stick, and a stole with Myaamia ribbonwork to wear during graduation ceremonies. Weeciwiiyaakiteeheemilaani ‘Congratulations’ to all of our graduates!
