Extreme Cold Weather Precautions

As we prepare for a period of extremely cold temperatures, I want to remind everyone to take necessary precautions to prevent potential damage to university facilities, including burst pipes and other cold-related issues.

Please review the following measures to help safeguard our campus:

  • Keep Interior Spaces Warm: Ensure that office and classroom thermostats are ON set to HEAT and at least 70°F, even in unoccupied spaces.
  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: If you have sinks or water lines in your area, allow a slow drip of water to keep pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer air circulation.  Ensure common space bathroom doors are propped open when not in use.
  • Close Doors and Windows Securely: Make sure all windows and doors are tightly closed when leaving for the day to retain heat and prevent drafts.
  • Check for Drafts and Leaks: Report any broken windows, drafts, or areas of concern to the Facilities Management Work Order Center at 870-972-2067.
  • Emergency Contacts: If you notice any issues related to heating or plumbing during business hours, contact the Facilities Management Work Order Center at 870-972-2067. For after-hour reports, contact University Police at 870-972-2093.  Campus residents should contact their RA on duty to report power outages, pipe bursts/leaks, or heat loss.

Your attention to these precautions helps ensure the safety and integrity of our campus facilities during this period of extreme weather.

The University Police Department is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week for your safety and protection. You can reach them at 870-972-2093. If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 911.

As you venture outside in the cold, bundle up, and please be careful as you are walking on campus over the next few days in the event of winter precipitation.  The Office of Safety & Emergency Management has assembled a Linktree with helpful winter resources for campus.

Please stay warm and take care.
