Over the summer, seven Myaamia students and recent graduates participated in the Akimaansa Young Ambassador Internship. This 8-week program provided an opportunity for these young adults to learn more about Myaamia culture and how to share it with others. The culminating event for them was participating in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. Read more about their experience on Aacimotaatiiyankwi.

Playing bowl game

As we reach the midpoint in the semester, students are preparing for midterm exams. For the Heritage class, this experience is using language while playing games! We’ll be playing games we often play at community gatherings: peekitahaminki, mahkisina meehkintiinki, and seenseewinki. Students will also get to play a more contemporary game: kiihkoneehshkiilo ‘Go Fish.’

This week, 10 Myaamia students participated in a seenseewinki game-making workshop so that they have their own bowl and pieces to play at home. Students were able to decorate a bowl using wood burning and paint, as well as design pieces made from Kentucky coffee beans.  If you want to learn about how to play, you can find more information in this post.
