Police Activity - Update
A shooting took place at the 65th Street light rail station just south of campus on Thursday, March 21. This incident attracted the response of the Sacramento Police Department and multiple law enforcement agencies and later involved the assistance of Sacramento State Police. As part of that incident, a car was stolen by suspects, who abandoned it in a Sac State parking lot. The suspects then fled to the American River levee.
Helicopters supporting the search flew over campus, broadcasting suspect descriptions. We understand this incident caused concern, fear, and anxiety among many.
Sacramento State Police sent out an email message about the incident. At the time the message went out, the incident was not considered an immediate threat to campus as information revealed the suspects had fled from campus. No official order was given for a campuswide lockdown. However, individual Sacramento State police officers told concerned people who reached out to them to shelter in place as a precaution.
The University and Sacramento State Police understand that prompt and accurate messaging is essential to informing the campus community and helping ensure their safety. Communication procedures are being reviewed now to determine how to improve messaging processes, going forward.
