Larner Scientists Decode Impact of Exercise |
In a paper published May 1 in Nature Communications, researchers including Larner College of Medicine scientists Russell Tracy, Ph.D., Jessica Rooney, M.P.H., Elaine Cornell, Nicole Gagne, and Sandy May laid out preliminary findings of a groundbreaking MoTrPAC study on the molecular effects of exercise on healthy adults and children, considering factors like age, race, and gender.

A Gold Foundation fellowship project by Lindsay Aldrich ’25 and Richard Vuong ’25 has led to an innovative new health care delivery vehicle and a novel technology agreement between UVM’s biomedical engineering design hub and the UVM Health Network. The project aims to bring the doctor’s office to people living in Vermont’s rural regions.

Christoph Niederhauser, M.S., graduated from the Larner College of Medicine’s master of medical science (M.M.S.) program in 2020, crediting that experience as key in his preparation for medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Immunobiologist Tina Thornton, Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine, is co-director of I-Trep, a UVM-based biomedical entrepreneurship training initiative, and UVM faculty lead of the Interior Northeast I-Corps Hub, which offers entrepreneurship training for student, postdoc, faculty, and other scientists and engineers. She was recently featured in an I-Corps Hub Instructor Spotlight in which she spoke about her experience guiding aspiring UVM entrepreneurs.

The University of Vermont has selected Stephen Everse, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry at the Larner College of Medicine, for the Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award. This award acknowledges exceptional service by a UVM faculty member who is recognized as a true university citizen for contributions to institutional building at the university.

Larner Class of 2026 medical student Anika Advant won the best student research award at the Northern New England CO-OP Practice and Community Based Research Network 44th Annual Meeting in January, for her poster titled “Identifying Barriers and Facilitators to Awareness and Rural Vermont Participation in Cancer Clinical Trials.”

More than 200 health care professionals and others who care for older adults participated in the Vermont Geriatric Conference on April 16. Isaura Menzies, M.D., M.P.H., and Katherine Martin coordinated the conference, which featured a variety of Larner College of Medicine experts in geriatric medicine, movement disorders, emergency medicine, and more.

Beth Kirkpatrick, M.D., professor and chair of microbiology and molecular genetics, joined infectious disease physicians, virologists, epidemiologists, and other scientists from across the globe at the World Health Organization’s Polio Research Committee (PRC) meeting in April in Geneva, Switzerland. The PRC is part of the public-private partnership Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

On March 21, the Surgery Senior Major Scientific Program showcased the scholarly work of 10 Larner Class of 2024 students who will be specializing in surgery following graduation: Kali Amoah, Natalie Bales, Sydney Cardozo, Rachel Carpenter, Amanda Galenkamp, Keira Goodell, Will Robinson, Warrick Sehene, Brian Shaw, and Max Tulimieri. Four were recognized for their outstanding scientific projects with Senior Surgery Major Awards.
