I’ve heard so much about San Antonio after one of my best friends moved there a few years ago, so I decided to make a surprise trip recently to visit him and see this part of the Lone Star State. Explore Pearl: The original Pearl Brewery had a long history in Texas, dating to 1883, and at one time was the largest brewery in the state. Years after the brewery closed, its twenty-three acres became a bustling district of restaurants, shops, vast outdoor spaces, and more. Stay at Hotel Emma, a nineteenth-century brewhouse that was transformed into a spectacular riverfront hotel, with references to the origins of the building throughout. And even if you don’t lay your head there, have a craft cocktail inside a banquette built in a massive fermentation tank at the gorgeous Sternewirth tavern and club. From there, go out and explore the district: Shop for gifts to take home at the vibrant Feliz Modern, or do happy hour at chef Steve McHugh’s restaurant Cured—the fried quail legs drizzled in local honey are a must.

Wander the River Walk: The San Antonio River Walk, the largest urban ecosystem in the country, is a fifteen-mile riverside walking path lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels. It’s a serene way to explore the city by foot, though you can also board the river barge for a relaxing cruise down the waterway. Be sure to stop by the Public Art Garden and dine riverside at Domingo Restaurant.

Shop and see art at Market Square: The largest Mexican market outside of Mexico is a bustling part of the city, with more than a hundred shops, live music, and occasional folklórico dance performances. Have a Tex-Mex lunch at Mi Tierra, where you’ll likely hear mariachi bands playing tableside, and finish your visit at Centro de Artes. This modern art gallery features a number of rotating local and regional exhibits, all showcasing art that helps tell the Latino experience in both South Texas and the United States.
