Laker to Laker: Message from Mary Albrecht,
Executive Associate for Administrative Operations

Dear Colleagues,
I felt incredibly honored when Provost Mili approached me with the request to write a Laker to Laker piece. Typically, I prefer to operate behind the scenes, orchestrating events and ensuring smooth operations rather than being in the spotlight. Nevertheless, upon being presented with this opportunity, I eagerly accepted so I could express my genuine appreciation to all the dedicated staff members who tirelessly serve our wonderful institution.
The Administrative Professional Staff (AP) and Professional Support Staff (PSS) are the backbone of our various departments and keep them running smoothly. They fulfill multiple roles across the University, each dedicated to their position. Some assist students in uncovering their passions and help equip them with the necessary skills to thrive in their future careers. Others focus on enhancing the learning environment by ensuring that labs, classrooms, studios, and other specialized spaces are well-equipped with the latest technology, equipment, and supplies to provide our students with an excellent educational experience. They possess the ability to answer all the miscellaneous questions posed to them, and if they don’t know the answer, they know who to call to find it. And still others specialize in organizing materials, events, and calendars that help all of us. While these are just some examples of the work they do, it’s clear that we could not accomplish all that we do without our staff.
In mid-April, AP staff were honored at a luncheon and as we approach the end of May, the PSS will be celebrated and their dedication acknowledged. These are two formal ways in which the university thanks our staff for their valuable contributions. It is also important that staff are aware of how much each of us values their help and expertise. I challenge all of us to take time this week to thank at least three staff members for the support they offer and the work they do. I guarantee, you’ll make someone’s day!
Thank you to all the PSS and AP staff for being an integral part of our Grand Valley community. Your work is invaluable, and I am honored to have you as colleagues and partners as we make a difference in the lives of our fellow Lakers.
Enjoy your week -
Mary Albrecht
Executive Associate for Administrative Operations
