Enjoy a cinematic ride with BUCKEYES GO! VINTAGE “ROAD MOVIES” MADE IN OHIO

BUCKEYES GO! VINTAGE “ROAD MOVIES” MADE IN OHIO film still
This summer, take a trip in and around the Buckeye State and through time—courtesy of BUCKEYES GO! VINTAGE “ROAD MOVIES” MADE IN OHIO, three classic, colorful "sponsored films" made by Cleveland’s Cinécraft Productions, the country's longest-standing corporate film & video production house. All three can be seen as "road movies." First up is Free Wheelin’ (1976), a documentary about 1970s van culture as seen at the 1976 National Truck-In in Bowling Green, KY. Sponsored by B.F. Goodrich Tires, the movie is like a street-van Woodstock and includes live performances by The J.T.S. Band. Next up is Milestones of Motoring (1954), an industrial musical starring Merv Griffin and Joe. E. Brown that traces Ohio’s transportation innovations—from the first drive-in gas station and first self-starter to the role of Standard Oil (the film’s sponsor) in developing automobile fuels. The program concludes with Invitation to Ohio (1964), in which a peanut vendor played by Wally Cox receives the red-carpet treatment from state officials when he ponders relocating his business to Ohio. Ohio Bell and the Ohio Development Dept. commissioned the film. Neil McCormick, co-owner of Cinécraft, will introduce the program Sunday at 4:15 pm. Free Wheelin’ has been newly restored by the Hagley Museum and Library, Wilmington, DE, with a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Special thanks to Jim Culley, Neil McCormick, and Kevin Martin.

RUMBLE FISH is Francis Ford Coppola's stylized and lyrical ode to restless youth

RUMBLE FISH film still
RUMBLE FISH, Francis Ford Coppola’s second S. E. Hinton adaptation (after The Outsiders), is a bold, expressionistic work that Sofia Coppola has called her favorite of her father’s films. Shot immediately after The Outsiders with three of that movie’s cast members (Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, and Tom Waits) along with Mickey Rourke, Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, and Larry Fishburne, the b&w 1983 movie tells of a restless teen tough guy whose idolization of his older brother, a legendary gang leader, may prove his undoing. It boasts an innovative music score by Stewart Copeland of The Police. See it shown from a 4K DCP Saturday at 6:50 pm or Sunday at 8:40 pm. Here's the trailer.

A smart crime drama with blockbuster energy THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE

THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE film still
Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw star in Joseph Sargent's thrilling 1974 crime drama, THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE, in which armed thugs hijack a NYC subway car and hold the conductor and riders hostage for a hefty ransom. Special admission is $14; members, CIA/CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $11. No passes or twofers will be honored or accepted. See 7/27 at 9:40 for another thriller directed by Joseph Sargent. Join Buster Keaton's adventures on the high seas in THE NAVIGATOR

 THE NAVIGATOR film still
In THE NAVIGATOR, one of his greatest silent comedies, Buster Keaton plays a wealthy fop adrift on a deserted ocean liner with his ditsy sweetheart. Keaton and Donald Crisp's 1924 film celebrates its 100th anniversary with a new digital restoration and a new music score by Robert Israel. Time Out regards it as "the funniest of all Keaton’s features." Catch the Cleveland revival premiere Friday at 7:00 pm. Here's the trailer.

BANAL & ADAMA tells a poetic tale of fierce love in a time of disaster

BANEL & ADAMA film still
BANEL & ADAMA, Senegal’s official submission for the 2024 Oscar for Best Int’l Feature, is a beautifully-realized fable set in a village in northern Senegal. Two teen lovers find that their total devotion to each other conflicts with their duty to the community and other local traditions. Ramata-Toulaye Sy's feature is "a striking debut" according to Variety. It receives its Cleveland premiere engagement Thursday at 9:05 pm and Saturday at 5:00 pm. See the trailer here.

KIDNAPPED shines a light on a true story of cruelty committed in the name of God

KIDNAPPED: THE ABDUCTION OF EDGARDO MORTARA film still
In 1858 Bologna, a seven-year-old Jewish boy who was secretly baptized by his nurse is kidnapped from his home by papal authorities and raised as a Catholic. This outrageous incident—and the resultant outcry from family members and the public—is dramatized in KIDNAPPED: THE ABDUCTION OF EDGARDO MORTARA, a powerful, sumptuous historical drama by octogenarian Italian master Marco Bellocchio (Fists in the Pocket, Vincere). Empire (UK) calls this Italian/French/German co-production "an expertly paced, gorgeously shot and evocative true story of faith, family, and the power of people coming together to right deeply ingrained wrongs." Catch the Cleveland premiere engagement Thursday at 6:30 pm or Friday at 8:20 pm. Here's the trailer.
