| Critical Conversation Tips to Have With Your College Student |
As your student begins a new semester, meaningful conversations can help them feel supported while building confidence and independence. Instead of asking, “How is everything going?” try asking specific, open-ended questions that encourage your student to share more.
1. Mental Health & Asking for Help
College can bring new challenges, stress, and moments of uncertainty. Remind your student that asking for support is a sign of strength.
Try asking:
|
- “What has been the biggest adjustment for you so far?”
-
“What do you do when you’re feeling overwhelmed?”
- “Who would you reach out to if you needed support?”
|
2. Independence & Problem-Solving
College is a time for students to learn how to navigate challenges on their own. Encourage your student to take ownership while knowing they have support available.
Try asking:
|
- “What challenges are you working through right now?”
- “What steps could you take to find a solution?”
- “Is there a campus resource or person who could help?”
|
3. Safety & Decision-Making
Students will make more independent choices in college. Talking about safety and responsibility before challenges arise can help them feel prepared.
Try asking:
|
- “What choices will help you have a safe and successful semester?”
-
“Who are the people you can count on if you need help?”
- “What is your plan if you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation?”
|
Remember: The goal is not to have all the answers, it’s to create an open conversation where your student feels comfortable coming to you for support.
