THE POWER OF EVERYDAY ACTIVITY |
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis — or NEAT — is the energy your body burns through all the little movements you do outside of formal workouts: walking, cleaning, gardening, taking the stairs, even fidgeting. These micro-movements might seem insignificant, but they add up to a major impact on your metabolism, heart health, and longevity. Research shows that people who naturally move more throughout the day have better insulin sensitivity, lower inflammation, and stronger cardiovascular systems — even if they never set foot in a gym.
To boost your NEAT, look for simple ways to stay in motion: park a little farther away, take phone calls while walking, stand up and stretch between emails, or do a few squats while dinner’s in the oven. Aim to break up long periods of sitting — even two minutes of light movement every half hour makes a difference. It’s not about intensity, it’s about frequency. Over time, these small, consistent bursts of movement quietly transform your energy, focus, and overall health — proving that fitness isn’t only about the hour you spend at the gym, but the way you move through the other 23.
