In this talk, Dr. Udis-Kessler will discuss her book Cultural Processes of Inequality: A Sociological Perspective (Anthem, 2024, now out in paperback with a new afterword). The book looks at cultural processes of inequality, providing examples from anti-Black racism, sexism, heterosexism, and cis-sexism in the U.S.
Racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other forms of inequality have important cultural aspects; how we make sense of the world has a lot to do with how inequality is created and maintained. In this faculty lunch talk, a follow-up from her September 2024 book launch talk, Udis-Kessler discusses how different forms of social power contribute to systemic inequality, recasts understandings of privilege to make the concept more sociologically useful, and provides concrete guidance for how all of us can work more effectively against inequality in all its forms.
