Gerardo Alvarez (’22 BS, Architecture) arrived at UTA fresh from his decision to pivot from studying aerospace engineering to architecture. When he came across UTA’s MavMentors program in a campus email, he saw it as an opportunity to start garnering the knowledge he would need to succeed in the real world. In the program, mentees are encouraged to choose a mentor who best matches their current and future professional goals, but Alvarez saw it as a chance to connect with someone who could broaden his understanding of the field.
Chair of civil engineering announced
Melanie Sattler, professor of civil engineering, has been named chair of the department. In more than 20 years at UTA, Dr. Sattler has taught courses related to sustainable engineering, solid waste management, and air quality. Her research focuses on sustainable energy from waste and life cycle environmental analysis.
New leader for undergraduate research
Kayunta Johnson-Winters, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has been named the interim director of undergraduate research. Dr. Johnson-Winters replaces Kenyatta Dawson, who served in the position for nearly five years.
Staffing changes in Office of the Provost
Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 1, Maria Martinez-Cosio will assume the role of interim senior vice provost for academic affairs. Dr. Martinez-Cosio's areas of responsibility will include academic planning and policy, institutional effectiveness, UTA Fort Worth, and the Office of the Registrar. In this new role, she will take over the portfolio overseen by Pranesh Aswath, who returns to the faculty Friday, Sept. 1. Dr. Aswath served in the provost’s office for nearly eight years shaping numerous student success initiatives, guiding UTA through accreditation processes, and overseeing the University’s COVID response for academic affairs.

Volunteer for Move-In Day
Volunteer for Move-In Day Thursday, Aug. 17, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and help more than 4,000 students settle into their new campus homes. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. Register for a two-hour shift by Monday, Aug. 14.
Recruit workers for your student employment positions at the Student Employment Job Fair Thursday, Aug. 24, 12-3 p.m., hosted by the Career Development Center. Register online by end of day, Monday, Aug. 14.

Congratulations to Eric Duncan, supervisor of The University Club, Katelyn Lunsford, who leads The Green Plum and supports Maverick Café, and Ryan Skagen, a culinary supervisor for Connection Café.
Volunteer slots are now open for the Black Maverick Welcome Saturday, Aug. 19, 4-8 p.m at the Maverick Activities Center. The event includes a student panel, interest sessions, resources, and free food. Sign up to volunteer by Friday, Aug. 4.

UTA Ambassadors is seeking volunteers for the fall semester Ask Me Days. Faculty and staff can sign up to network with incoming freshman, answer questions about their department, and offer general information about campus. Volunteer slots are available Aug. 21-22, 8 a.m-2 p.m.
First-Generation Brunch and Alumni Mixer
New faculty and staff are welcome to join a campus tour on the last Friday of every month. Guided walking tours last approximately 1.5 hours. To attend, arrive at the Dan Dipert University Welcome Center, 580 South Center St., about 15 minutes before start time.
