Dear #RPSStrong Family,
Tonight's updates:
| |
| Fist Bumps for SOLs – Students at Fairfield Court ES received a pleasant surprise upon arrival this morning – fist bumps from members of the Richmond Police Department, Richmond Fire Department, and Engagement Office to encourage the Eagles on their SOLs. It truly takes a village, and the Richmond village stepped up this morning!

| Stage Write – Stage Write is a college prep and workforce readiness program that uses writing and performance to help students develop communication skills and advocate for issues that are important to them. This year, students from Armstrong HS, George Wythe HS, Richmond Community HS, and Thomas Jefferson HS collaborated to create a series of public service announcements about domestic violence, fights, sexual assault, and gun violence. Enormous gratitude to the Cadence Theatre for their continued partnership on this program!

| New Teacher Bright Spot – Tonight, we're highlighting Peyton Humphreys, 5th grade ELA/reading and science teacher at John B. Cary ES. "The first year of teaching is everything I’ve ever heard it would be: challenging, yet oh so rewarding. Each day, I find that I am learning new things about myself alongside my students. We have been faced with numerous obstacles and moments that felt nearly impossible. Through hard work and teamwork, we have created a tight-knit family within the four walls of my class. My primary goal is to help each scholar who comes into my classroom leave a better and stronger person than when they came in, both academically and emotionally. I am blessed to be a teacher, a mentor, a friend, and a shoulder to cry on for these young minds. I look forward to continuing to foster excitement in the classroom and a joy for learning in each of my scholars.” ~ Peyton Humphreys

| We Are Richmond – The City of Richmond will hold a spring resource fair and family day this Saturday, May 20, from 12-3 pm at the Bellemeade Community Center. They'll have community resources, music, food, and even a petting zoo!

- I would like to send a shout-out to Ms. Hayes, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Simpson, Ms. Nucklos, Ms. Polk and Ms. Lewis for organizing the Maymont Preschool Center’s first Sneaker Ball on this past Friday. It was a huge success.
- Thank you to the PHSSA staff for all the congratulatory well wishes on my graduation yesterday. Your kind words and gifts are greatly appreciated.
- I want to publicly thank the Transportation Department for their support of Overby-Sheppard. We see you and we want to thank each of you for all you do to support our students. We appreciate you.
- I want to shout-out Principal Director Indira Quarles. She is truly a thought partner. She makes sure she follows up when she gets a concern and will process it with you. I appreciate you, Indira. Thank you for the follow up around ensuring my building has the support they need during SOL testing.
- I cannot say enough about the Family Engagement Department over the past several weeks. Your support has been invaluable and we appreciate you at Overby-Sheppard.
- John Grove, you are amazing. Thank you for your continued chats and support around all things data. We appreciate you at Overby-Sheppard and find you incredible at what you do.
- I’d like to shout-out Ms. Dewind at Ginter Park Elementary. She dropped everything to try to problem solve a student’s learning snags and brainstorm solutions. She truly cares and it shows!
- Ms. Lampley is very professional and a good listener. She takes time to answer questions one by one so that I could leave our meeting well informed. She is dependable, respectful and dedicated to the work she does at RPS.
- Huuuuuuge shout-out to Andrea Gardner in IT for her support of the Richmond Technical Center throughout the year, but especially during course request season. Her knowledge, skills, and fluidity with Aspen are remarkable, which allows the school scheduling team to be more efficient with our workflow. Thanks, Andrea!
- I’d like to give a shout-out to Principal Jones, Asst. Principal Rae, and Ms. Dunnavant of Ginter Park Elementary School for their diligence in handling an issue regarding my son yesterday afternoon. Confusion arose from a change in our circumstances and these ladies stepped up with the same grace and instinct that I would have, and followed up to make sure everything was okay.
- Congratulations to Mr. Canady of Fairfield Elementary and his students. The students participated in the Virginia Association Literacy Explosion photo essay competition. Nailah Mansfield won 1st place and ShyTia Henry won 2nd place.
- Thank you to Luke Hostetter, director of enrollment, placement and planning, who with little notice carved out time to help me with pulling and organizing data. His generous and helpful demeanor is so appreciated!
- This is my first year as a designated reading/ELA teacher at Southampton Elementary School. Today all 65 of my 5th grade students took their Reading SOL. I and my students have worked extremely hard over the past year to get to where we are today. I of course would not have made it through it all without Mrs. Kelly Taylor, reading specialist and coach at Southampton. Mrs. Taylor, thank you for supporting and cheering me on as a new reading teacher. Thank you for providing me with all new strategies and knowledge to succeed. Much love coming your way!
- I would like to shout-out the 4th graders at Westover Hills Elementary School for their Minds & Motion performance on Thursday. They were spectacular! Thank you to the WHES teachers and staff who supported the students backstage – you all rock!
- I am so thankful for the support of Rochelle Wilkins with regards to testing. She is very knowledgeable of all procedures and protocols. She ensures that the STCs are well prepared and informed for each administration. Thank you for everything you do!
- Shout-out to Ms. T. Lashley and Ms. P. Mines with the Special Olympics for their tremendous work with inclusion and ensuring FAPE for all scholars in RPS. Thank you for a great experience with the Little Feet Meet and the Big Feet Meet. Thank you for including the Richmond Virtual Academy (RVA), staff, teachers, families, and Circle of Friends, as it is RVA's goal to be an inclusive school that focuses on providing an exceptional experience with all scholars and ensuring FAPE. RVA families and scholars have sung your praises. Hoot Hoot!
- I am so blessed to be a part of Lucille M. Brown 6th grade math team. You guys make my job so enjoyable. I would like to thank Mrs. Graf, Ms. McKay, Mr. Owens and Mr. Brownlee for your unwavering support. The fun and engaging activities that you guys create and bring to fruition are absolutely amazing! - I would like to give Ms. Chante Johnson, her staff, and her students at Lucille Brown Middle School a big shout-out for implementing stations in the classroom. With the variety of students in her room, she has continued to meet their needs using this approach to instruction. She has found ways to increase independence, communication, socialization, as well as job readiness skills by appointing "supervisors" of each station. Thank you, as well, to the administration there for recognizing and supporting their efforts. It is greatly appreciated!!!!
- I'd like to send a shout-out to the 5th grade team at Linwood Holton! In addition to contributing to an incredibly smooth SOL testing session this morning, we had 100% student attendance! We are grateful for the team's excellent communication with their students and families! Thank you, Ms. Turnage, Ms. Wilkerson, Mrs. Harr, Mr. Gaskin, and Mr. Bowles for all that you do!
- Mr. Y is a huge asset to PHSSA. He makes sure the students have what they need to be successful and does not hesitate to lend a hand. Thank you so much for being a part of the team!

- I wanted to take a moment to give a shoutout to our teachers and students in the intensive support classroom (Room 103) at Linwood Holton for working collaboratively with Ms. Tanguay (occupational therapist) and Mrs. Easter (art teacher) on the beautiful bulletin board that is in the hallway!
