Conference of Quaker Historians and Archivists
in Lancashire, England |
The Conference of Quaker Historians and Archivists is a favorite event of scholars in this field, especially when it is held in Great Britain. Earlier this summer, Friends Historical Library staff: Curator Jordan Landes, Associate Curator Celia Caust-Ellenbogen, Digital Archivist James Truitt, and Digital Collections Strategist Emily Higgs Kopin, attended the conference in the northeast of England at the University of Lancaster, where they heard and presented talks about Quaker history. In honor of the 400th birthday of George Fox, one of the founders of Quakerism, the talks focused on the 17th century and earliest decades of Quakerism. Lancashire is home to the original Pendle Hill (the namesake of the local Quaker retreat center Pendle Hill in Wallingford, PA) where, in 1652, George Fox had a vision that opened the way for the new movement. “Pen” is Cumbric for hill. Centuries later, the Old English for hill, “hyll', was appended to “pen”, making it “Penhyll,” which became “Pendle.” Modern English then added the word “hill” to the name. So when we say “Pendle Hill,” we are really saying “Hill-hill Hill”!
