Dear Friends,
I am writing this during our Spring Break, a wonderful time to reflect on the year to date and the closing stretch of the academic year. This year I am struck by the wonderful way this cohort has both come together and embraced all that the ILI program has to offer. We are all grateful they chose to be a part of the ILI as they are truly drawing much from each other and the campus community, and at the same time offering much to the students and faculty they encounter.

In this Insights you will have an opportunity to get to better know one of our core faculty, Jenny Martin, in an article written by one of our alums, Mary Ellen Woods. Additionally, you will hear about the impact our fellows are having after they finish their ILI year from Emily Turner, who now heads up Prospect Development and Alumni Relations for the ILI. You will also get a chance to meet some of the wonderful visitors who have been kind enough to join us on campus this year, some of whom participated in one of our digital speaker series which our fellows attend in person.
I will close by saying that we continue to be amazed by the remarkable people who are interested in the ILI program, and are feeling great about the cohort that is coming together for next year. If you are interested in learning more or applying to join this wonderful group, please see the details below.

Faculty Spotlight: Professor Jennifer Newsome Martin |

A central element of the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) is “The Human Journey,” the core course, the fellows’ course as I think of it. Fellows join in reading, reflection, and discussion of three integrated areas of study: Great Books, Heart’s Desire, and Designing an Inspired Life. New to the ILI family is Professor Jennifer Newsome Martin. Professor Martin holds joint appointments at Notre Dame. She is an Associate Professor in the Program of Liberal Studies and also an Associate Professor in the Department of Theology. Martin holds a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the University of Notre Dame. She joined the Notre Dame faculty in 2012. Prof. Martin leads the Great Books section of the core course alongside Prof. Michelle Marvin.

I had the good fortune to spend time with Martin on a visit to the Notre Dame campus. It was clear to me that ILI has found a wonderful addition to the ILI faculty family and that fellows will benefit tremendously from her scholarship. Within The Human Journey Core Course, the Great Books component is organized as a seminar, woven together with the other elements – Heart’s Desire and Designing An Inspired Life. Fellows prepare through readings and writing assignments for rigorous examinations of “big questions.” Through study and discussion together, they examine timeless questions and explore their own values, motivations, and goals. Mary Ellen Woods, a Notre Dame alum (1980) and ILI alum (cohort 3, 2021-2022) wrote for The Observer (the University of Notre Dame student newspaper) throughout her time as an ILI Fellow. Writing was a goal that Mary Ellen realized as an ILI fellow, and something she continues to be engaged in after her time in the ILI.

One of the most common questions we receive when discussing the Inspired Leadership Program is “what comes next for your fellows after their academic year on campus?” Truthfully, I always respond in a similar way: “in a cohort of 20 individuals, there will be 20 different answers to that question.” Those of us lucky enough to work intimately with this program, closely accompanying the fellows, know that the answer to “what comes next” is as unique and diverse as the individuals who spend an academic year with us on campus.

During their year on campus, our fellows cast a wide net as they explore new areas and reflect on their past experiences. This provides them with an opportunity to delve more deeply into their own passions, and then chart their path forward. Part of the beauty of the ILI is the fact that it provides enough structure to offer some guidance in this pursuit, and enough flexibility to truly be tailored to the needs of each individual. ILI fellows have already had a lifetime of making a difference in the world around them in many ways. Similarly, they will continue to seek ways of having an impact after their time in the ILI is done. However, how that is manifested is unique to each person.
We invite you to visit the newly added Impact page on our website - ili.nd.edu/impact - to learn more about how our fellows and alums are serving as forces for good in their communities and beyond. The profiles currently highlighted are just a sampling of the many powerful ways our fellows are making a difference. We're excited to continue to share their stories and celebrate their accomplishments, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for all of our fellows and alumni.
