Gateway85 CID has been hard at work this summer advancing our mobility initiatives and beautification projects. Our efforts are focused on enhancing the quality of life in our district by creating safer, more accessible environments for all businesses, residents and visitors. Below are some notable highlights on our progress:
Mobility Improves with Sidewalk Additions
After a decade of dedicated work, Gateway85 CID is proud to announce that we have successfully met our commitments to Gwinnett County as outlined in the 2014 and 2017 SPLOST projects. We have installed more than 17 miles of sidewalks within the district, significantly improving pedestrian safety and accessibility and we recently partnered with Meadowcreek High School to fulfill a long-standing need for a sidewalk in front of the school, connecting Beaver Ruin Road to Indian Trail Road.
These enhancements create a more walkable and connected community, ensuring community members enjoy safe and convenient routes for their daily commutes and activities.

On July 12, representatives from Gateway85 CID and the Gwinnett County Planning Division convened to discuss the Jimmy Carter Boulevard (JCB) Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) project. The meeting addressed unique area challenges and focused on improving freight flow, enhancing safety, boosting transit options, increasing walkability and fostering a stronger sense of community. Adding a community stormwater retention plan into the LCI framework is also being considered.
Collaborating with this talented team, as part of a series of ongoing projects with the County, will help to develop a visionary plan for Jimmy Carter Boulevard, improve the area and increase property values.
Southwest Gwinnett Safe Access Study
Have you heard we are actively collaborating with the County on the Southwest Gwinnett Safe Access Study, which seeks to enhance safety and connectivity for pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders? This study, funded by the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Livable Centers Initiative program, will also explore opportunities to revitalize two underdeveloped nodes, transforming them into vibrant, walkable environments.
We invite you to share your feedback at a public meeting on Thursday, August 1, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Lilburn Activity Building Community Room. For more information and to complete a short survey on project recommendations, go to the Gwinnett County website.
We're not done! Next month, we will update you on the Jimmy Carter Boulevard enhancements as a result of an $850,000 investment through a federal grant, and a unique partnership with DeKalb County to study traffic solutions for both counties.

Gateway85 Coalition Update |
The Gateway85 Coalition is a partnership of local business leaders, non-profit organizations and government officials working collaboratively to improve access to essential human services, education and employment opportunities for the rapidly growing Latino community in Gwinnett County. Our goal? Foster strong relationships, gather valuable feedback and drive area economic development.
On June 27, the Coalition held another successful meeting at Corners Outreach during which Sheriff Keybo Taylor highlighted the accomplishments of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office from 2021 to 2023. Tina Fleming, director of community services at Gwinnett County, then presented a Five-Year Strategic Plan, and Megha D. Young and Beth Smith of Bihl Engineering shared the Southwest Gwinnett Safe Access Study presentation. Each speaker provided valuable insights that fostered discussion and informed attendees about Gwinnett's past, present and future.

Gateway85 CID Provides A New Sidewalk for Meadowcreek High School |
|
|
Dr. Wood, Principal - Meadowcreek High School |
|
Gateway85 CID is thrilled to announce a collaborative effort with Meadowcreek High School to complete a critical sidewalk project on Steve Reynolds Boulevard. Recognizing a significant need for more than 30 years, the CID took decisive action to address the safety and mobility challenges faced by the school community. This new sidewalk will fill a crucial gap, connecting Beaver Ruin Road to Indian Trail Road.
“We are committed to supporting our community and this project reflects our dedication to the well-being of nearby residents, as well as the students and staff at the high school. By providing a safer and more accessible route, we’re helping create a more connected community and ensuring a secure and reliable path to and from school," said Robert Michener, director of operations for the CID.
|
|
|
“For years, Meadowcreek High School students have navigated an old footpath, and the new sidewalk will provide a secure and reliable route for students and community members alike. This upgrade will also link the school with neighboring apartments where many of our students live. By providing a safe path for walking to and from school, we are fostering a stronger, more connected community,” said Principal Dr. Wood.
This much-needed project is expected to be completed by the beginning of the fall semester. Gateway85 CID is committed to creating a safer, more accessible environment for all.

Georgia has the fifth-highest number of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, with around 18,000 individuals. Despite their significant contributions and legal presence – some coming into the country at a very young age - these DREAMers face substantial barriers to higher education in Georgia, including ineligibility for in-state tuition, HOPE scholarships and Pell Grants. This financial strain prolongs their education and delays their entry into the workforce, although there is bipartisan support to address these issues.
FWD.us, an advocacy organization founded by leaders in the tech community, champions policies to support DACA recipients and comprehensive immigration reform. By engaging with lawmakers, conducting research, building coalitions and raising public awareness, FWD.us works to increase educational access and economic integration for DREAMers. Its efforts aim to reduce barriers to higher education, promote workforce participation and foster stronger, more inclusive communities, benefiting both DACA recipients and the broader society.
Supporting DACA recipients and facilitating their educational and professional development can significantly benefit the Gateway85 business community. By removing barriers to higher education and workforce entry, more skilled and educated individuals will be available to meet the labor needs of local businesses. This, in turn, can enhance the region's economic growth and competitiveness. Moreover, creating a more inclusive environment for DACA recipients can lead to a more diverse and innovative workforce that fosters creativity and drives business success within the Gateway85 district.

Joseph Ruiz’s American Dream
Joseph Ruiz's journey through life is a testament to perseverance and the power of education. Raised in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Joseph faced numerous challenges from a young age. With his father incarcerated and his mother struggling to raise four children, Joseph experienced a chaotic and demanding childhood. Despite these and other obstacles, Joseph excelled in school, finding solace and purpose in his education.
At 17, Joseph's life took another turn when his family moved to Chicago. However, the promise of a better life quickly faded as his stepfather became abusive and neglected his education. Determined to overcome these new challenges, Joseph worked multiple jobs and took English lessons at Truman College, eventually earning his GED. His journey led him to Gwinnett County, where he balanced work and education, ultimately earning multiple degrees. After completing his studies, Joseph began his career as an educator and now serves as an international student advisor for Gwinnett County Public Schools, where he continues to inspire young minds with his story of resilience.
