Stories of impact from I/O Magazine
Duke Engineering has a long history of partnering with communities throughout North Carolina to impact their well-being. This month, I'm particularly proud to share the efforts of Prof. Lisa Satterwhite, who is working to help coastal communities reclaim their waters from fear and uncertainty caused by neurotoxin-releasing algal blooms. I encourage everyone to explore this project through the lens of this incredible mini-documentary produced by Maddie Go, with crucial support from Alex Sanchez and Angela Brockelsby. Kudos to our communications team for this piece and the many insightful stories appearing in our newly released edition of I/O Magazine.

The artificial intelligence revolution happening right now isn’t just computationally powerful, it’s energy hungry. As one of this year's Thomas Langford Lecturers, Prof. Tania Roy described her lab's efforts to shift computational resources away from massive data centers. Her goal is to develop hardware capable of performing artificial intelligence tasks close to where data is captured. "We have the ideas," she said. "We have the talent, and we’re building the hardware that will carry us to the next great leap."

This past summer, MEMS faculty, staff and students spent their sunny days mentoring young researchers, engaging middle schoolers in STEM and bringing robotics to life for kids in the Durham community.
From laboratories to libraries, check out three amazing and impactful outreach efforts.
