Thanksgiving
by Charlie Smith I love Thanksgiving.
I love the holiday, and not just because of the abundance of good food.
I hold dear a Smith table tradition of my mother’s oyster stuffing. And I’ve always been partial to pecan (puh-kahn) pie.
Thanksgiving stirs up a cornucopia of other cherished memories.
After-meal naps. Football games, including The ’71 Game of The Century, Nebraska 35, Oklahoma 31, when, yes, there was clearly a clip on Johnny Rodgers’ punt return for a TD that the refs missed. And remember how cold it got when that front pushed through in the fourth quarter?
Thanksgiving stirs memories of reunions with high-school chums during college break. One year, instead of coming home, I traveled to the Long Island home of my fraternity roommate, and achieved bucket-list goals of attending the Macy’s parade (so packed we couldn’t move) and skating on Rockefeller Center’s ice rink. (Full disclosure: Some beer may have been involved …) READ MORE

November Rotary Magazine for Rotarian Subscribers
It's been nearly two years since a pair of earthquakes tore through Turkey and Syria, killing more than 50,000 people and leaving millions homeless. Within hours of the disaster, Rotary district leaders in Turkey were mapping out a plan that would grow into a multimillion-dollar relief effort. In this issue of Rotary magazine, we visit southern Turkey to see how that relief effort remains for many a path out of the wreckage.

In another of this month's features, you'll read about the Rotarian who is at the center of a statewide drive to eliminate cervical cancer in Alabama, which ranks near the top nationally in both incidence of and mortality from the disease. Isabel Scarinci's determination stems, in part, from her experience as a survivor of another vaccine-preventable disease: polio.
In the Our Clubs section, we check in on the Rotary Club of Mostar, one of the first multiethnic organizations to emerge from that city after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Like the landmark bridge they helped reconstruct, the club remains a symbol of reconciliation and understanding.
Prefer to listen? Check out the Rotary Voices podcast for audio versions of the magazine's best storytelling, along with full episodes featuring bonus interviews.
