Editor's Note: This week's eBulletin is a special edition with Hurricane Helene updates.
Normal programming will return in next week's eBulletin.
West Pelzer residents S.C. House of Representative Elect Blake Sanders, Rick Sanders and Tracy Ray cut up trees that fell early Friday morning during the storm along Highway 8. One person died in a two vehicle wreck at this location around 2 a.m. Saturday. In a separate incident, a pedestrian attempting to get around the fallen tree was also struck by a vehicle. THANK YOU!

We are so proud of the work S.C. newspapers have done to share credible, timely news and information about Hurricane Helene and the impact the storm has had on our state.
We’ve heard from most members in impacted areas, who report they are safe and doing their best despite challenges.
Nearly all SCPA members were able to print and distribute newspapers this week, as well as utilize their websites and social media to share critical information with the community. Many did this without power and internet, in addition to navigating roads with downed trees and power lines.
We’ve heard stories of collaboration, sharing resources and other ways our members and S.C. communities have come together during this time of crisis.
We know these challenges are far from over for many SCPA members, but hang in there. As the trusted source of news in your area, the coverage you’re doing is vital.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to connecting your community, serving your neighbors and sharing important, local journalism to towns and cities across our state.
Keep up the good work… your community depends on it.

Postal delivery updates

If you use the Post Office to deliver your newspapers, here is a link to bookmark for industry alerts and notices. On Monday, USPS shared a list of suspended retail locations in South Carolina, but noted there was no impact to drop shipments and mail delivery would continue with limited impacts. You can also sign up to receive these alerts by emailing IndustryAlert@usps.gov

Help SCPA update Disaster Checklist

As we’ve learned from Hurricane Helene and other major storms, your newspaper has a unique and important responsibility to the community and must plan to operate in a crisis. You need to be prepared so you can continue to function in spite of setbacks. Preplanning is the most important step in avoiding or knowing what to do in case of a disaster.
SCPA is currently reviewing and updating the Disaster Checklist for Newspapers to better include current technology and other helpful information related to power, internet, roads, safety and other matters.
Members: please think about your experience and share resources, tips and feedback on what worked/didn’t work based on your experience with Hurricane Helene and other natural disasters.
We hope to release an updated guide in the next few weeks.
