Grand Valley State University

Dear Lakers,

The safety of our Laker community will always be our number one priority. So today we want to provide some reminders of existing policies and introduce new enforcement strategies designed to create a safer environment for all members of the GVSU community. We also want to thank the many students and visitors who understand and follow the rules to keep each other safe. As Lakers, we need to work together so we can all have the best possible experience here at GVSU.

Beginning Thursday, Oct. 8, Grand Valley will be enhancing enforcement of our current visitor/guest policy on our Valley Campus in Allendale as part of our commitment to improving the safety and orderliness of our community.

Each evening, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., all vehicular access to campus will need to travel through the arch entrance on Campus Drive off Lake Michigan Drive. All vehicles must enter campus from this location. All other access roads will be blocked for entry during this time. Vehicles may exit from any street or road.

Only vehicles operated/occupied by individuals who are students, faculty, staff, contractors/vendors/service providers on University-related business, buses, food delivery or rideshare, emergency and public safety personnel, recreation ID holders, individuals authorized by the Department of Public Safety, or pre-registered guests will be allowed access to GVSU through this entrance at these times.

It is important to always have your GVSU-issued ID card on your person. You will be required to show it as you enter campus. You must also be prepared to show your ID when you enter your residence hall.

If you want to host a guest, please review the guest policy and register your guest by 5 p.m. the DAY BEFORE THEY ARRIVE ON CAMPUS. If they are not registered before the deadline, they will be turned away. You can register your guests here.

Even if you are a student living off campus, you must still register any guests you plan to bring onto GVSU’s campus anytime from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays by 5 p.m. the day before arrival.

A reminder that quiet hours in residence halls are from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., and non-sanctioned gatherings of more than 10 people in a residence hall lobby/lounge, outside a housing space, or in nearby parking lots will not be allowed during quiet hours.

GVSU parking lots will be closed to anyone who is not a faculty, staff, student, or registered guest beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday through 3 a.m. Monday morning when regular parking permits are required. Cars that are not registered with GVSU will be ticketed $150 per night and may be towed. You can secure a parking permit here.

See this FAQ document for more details.

We know changes like this can be disruptive, and we appreciate your cooperation to help make campus a social, safe, and nurturing environment for all members of our community.
