Welcome to another GVPD monthly safety tips email. This month our focus is on CARE Referalls.

CARE referrals are intended to encourage faculty, staff, students and others to voluntarily refer a student who may be struggling with academic, personal or emotional difficulties and may be exhibiting concerning behavior.

CARE referrals can be submitted for health and safety concerns, family issues, financial or food insecurity, and other situations that challenge an individual's well-being. Students, faculty and staff can submit a CARE referral on the GVSU website.

The CARE team's primary function is to help keep the university community safe and to connect distressed students to support services. The team seeks prevention rather than reaction to students in distress.

In doing this the CARE team:

Depending on the circumstances, the CARE team may reach out to the student being referred. Staff will assist in connecting students with relevant resources across campus and provide outreach and follow-up as needed and when appropriate to promote student success.

There may be circumstances where referred students are not contacted by a member of the CARE team, but appropriate staff members are always made aware of the concerns. Someone from the CARE team will follow up with the reporting party only when additional information is needed.

If a concern involves an immediate safety risk to oneself or others, call 911.
