Thanksgiving Holiday

The church campus will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Help Rejoice School of Ballet ensure that our 2024 Children's Ballet Showcase on Saturday, December 7th is a success! We have a set-up shift + 2 performance shifts. Volunteer roles for the performance shifts include walking dancers to and from the stage, assisting with tutus, supervising the photo booth, and managing the snack table! A minimum of 1 volunteer per task is needed, but 2 volunteers per task is ideal. If you are available for both performance shifts, you are more than welcome to sign up for the same task for both performances. Thank you so much and please contact Cora at chedgis@rejoiceballet.com with any questions.
Want to Know What You Can Do to Reduce Your Environmental Footprint?
Members of the Earth Care Task Force have been approached several times about ways to reduce one’s greenhouse gas and environmental footprint. Here is a link to our list of things you can do around your household. The last few are organizations you might consider joining if you want to join others in this effort.

Want to sign up for a newsletter to expand your climate news?

There are so many good climate and environmental newsletters that it’s difficult to choose just one. Anna Robertson’s The Cool Down (TCD) is full of well-researched articles on how climate change is affecting our lives and what people are doing about it, from making carbon-negative shoes to discovering ways to grow drought-resistant crops, and reviews that help you make the best choices on everything from composters to induction stoves.

The Climate Optimist by Anne Therese Gennari, focuses on “changing the narrative on climate change so we can act from courage and excitement, not fear.”

To stay up-to-date on the science, check out The Climate Brink by Andrew Dessler and Zeke Hausfather.

History of the Red Kettle
In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome -- funding the project.
Where would the money come from, he wondered. He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city's poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called "Simpson's Pot" into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor.

The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, "Keep the Pot Boiling." He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas.
