Welcome to 2025!

We are excited to share local events, training opportunities, grants, climate action tips and news in the Hume region, Goulburn Valley and North East Victoria. We hope this newsletter provides you with valuable information and strengthens our connection with you.

As bushfires and hot weather continue, we recommend everyone download the Vic Emergency app, check on your vulnerable family & community, and review your emergency evacuation plans.

Emergency Planning Workshops for Farmers
When and where:
Wed 12 February | Mount Beauty Community Centre
Tues 18 February | Myrtleford Senior Citizens' Centre
Cost: Free

Alpine Council has two free workshops to support farmers prepare for emergencies that could impact their properties, assets and businesses. Having a plan can help future-proof businesses.

ANU Climate Update 2025: If not now, when?
When: 5:30pm to 6:30pm | Thurs 13 February
Where: Online (also in person at the Canberra ANU campus)
Cost: Free

Learn from Prof. Mark Howden as he presents on the latest research and data about how our climate is changing and how we are responding to these changes in Australia and around the world. This is followed by an audience Q+A session.

Women in Conservation Breakfast
When: 7:30am to 9:30am | Fri 28 February
Where: Seven Creeks Hotel Function Room, Euroa
Cost: Free

Join local women from the region for breakfast, hear from inspiring individuals who are leading conservation efforts, and stream the Melbourne Event's keynote speaker,
Dr. Teagan Shields, who will present on ‘Empowering Aboriginal-led Traditional Knowledge for biodiversity conservation in Australia’.

Neighbourhood Battery Training Series
Cost: Free

Yarra Energy Foundation has developed a series of videos about neighbourhood batteries covering:

Victorian Government's Neighbourhood Battery Program
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) components, operation, and procurement 
Neighbourhood battery project implementation and develoment

Grants

Solar panel rebates for rentals

Rebates available: 1,344 remaining

DEECA provides rebates of up to $1,400 to eligible rental providers for the installation of solar panel systems on a maximum of two rental properties each financial year. This helps renters save on their energy bills. An agreement must be signed by you and your renter/s.

You can also reduce your upfront cost further by applying for an interest-free loan to match the rebate amount.

The Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal (FRRR) has two grants currently open dedicated to help rural communities access funding.

Cool Down Your Home This Summer

Geoff Lodge, CEO of GV Community Energy, discussed how to keep homes cool this Summer, covering a range of topics including:

Passive vs active cooling
Windows and shade
Efficient energy use in the home

Climate Science Report 2024

DEECA released Victoria's Climate Science Report 2024 which provides the latest science on Victoria’s changing and future climate.

The report empowers all Victorians to make informed climate-related decisions and underscores the value of Victoria’s efforts to reach net zero by 2045.
