Bringing the Quantum Realm to Middle School

Emily Edwards, an associate professor at Duke University, is using the power of games to teach middle school students about quantum mechanics through a project called Quander, which simplifies complex quantum concepts. Edwards and her team have created interactive games that cover topics like superposition and entanglement, and plan to expand the project to include offline card games. The National Science Foundation supports this work to enhance Quander further and reach more students through both digital and physical game formats.

Allen Building Spaces Dedicated to Honor Janet Hill & Hill Family:

Duke University honored late trustee emerita Janet Hill by renaming the boardroom in the Allen Building as The Janet Hill Executive Boardroom and the adjoining office as The Hill Family Presidential Suite, thanks to a gift from her son Grant Hill and his wife Tamia. Janet Hill served on the Duke Board of Trustees for 15 years, contributing to various committees and major initiatives, including the presidential search for Duke's 10th president. The family’s connection to Duke began when Grant Hill was recruited to play basketball in 1990, and Janet and her husband Calvin were active volunteers.

Duke Again Named Top Producer of Fulbright Scholars

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has recognized Duke University for having one of the highest numbers of students selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Fifteen Duke students were chosen for Fulbright awards for the 2024-25 academic year, where they will teach, pursue graduate study and conduct research in 11 countries across four continents. The Fulbright Program, named after Senator William Fulbright, aims to foster international cooperation, cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the U.S. and over 140 countries worldwide.
