I am pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Koritansky will join CSU as our inaugural Director of the Center for Civics, Culture and Society starting June 1, 2025. Dr. Koritansky currently is Professor of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in Prince Edward Island, Canada. In this new role at CSU, Dr. Koritansky will report to Provost Nigamanth Sridhar. In addition, as the Center for Civics, Culture and Society will be housed within the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education, he will work closely with Dean Jill Gordon to advance the Center’s mission to foster understanding and dialogue on the issues of civics, culture and society.

Dr. Koritansky has been a member of the departments of history, philosophy and religious studies at UPEI since 2006. Prior to this most recent appointment, he taught at Walsh University and Malone University, and he has been a visiting scholar at The University of Notre Dame and Princeton University. In addition to teaching, Dr. Koritansky has written or edited four books and more than a dozen articles and book chapters. His primary areas of scholarship include the history of political philosophy, philosophy of religion and the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas.
Throughout his academic career of more than 20 years, Dr. Koritansky has also held several administrative positions. He has served as the Chair of UPEI’s Department of Religious Studies twice and also the Acting Chair of their Department of Philosophy. While at UPEI, he has also led years-long initiatives to develop departmental strategic plans and stewarded multimillion-dollar investments to support academic programs.
“I am deeply honored to be joining the faculty at Cleveland State,” said Dr. Koritansky. “Having grown up in Northeastern Ohio, I am thrilled to be coming home and to be serving the students of CSU, the people of the Greater Cleveland area and the State of Ohio.”
Dr. Koritansky earned his B.A. in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto.
