Dear Colleagues,

Like you, I am deeply distressed about what is occurring at our Millar library. I have heard from many who have expressed their sadness and also have offered their support for those faculty and staff who work in our library, for the students who depend on the services and instruction, and for our community, which treasures our beautiful library that is so emblematic of who we are as an institution. I also share your concern for the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, who are directly involved, and for all of those who have been impacted.

I want to be sure you are aware that no one is authorized to be in the Millar Library. Anyone who remains in the library is committing criminal trespass and will be held accountable for their actions. As your interim Provost, I am directing all PSU faculty not to enter the library. If you are already there, you must leave immediately. Anyone who violates this directive may be subject to criminal prosecution, as well as personnel disciplinary action.

These are challenging days and if you find yourself in need of support you may want to take advantage of PSU’s Employee Assistance Program which offers a variety of services.

I can share that every member of our leadership team wants to bring this protest to a peaceful conclusion. President Cudd has demonstrated her willingness to negotiate, listen, entertain civil debate, and protect our academic freedom. Thank you for your support and your love for Portland State.

Sincerely,
Shelly Chabon, Ph.D.
Interim Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs
