| Our Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum |
After a two-year hiatus, we’re thrilled to welcome our Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum to our Conservatory—making its debut today! Showcasing 1,366 Chrysanthemum × morifolium ‘Susono-no-Hikari’ yellow flowers on a single plant—and stretching more than 12 feet in diameter—this year’s Thousand Bloom is the widest we have ever grown at Longwood. Come experience the beauty and artistry of this spectacular plant; it’s on display, with the rest of Chrysanthemum Festival, now through November 12.

Longwood Reimagined Continues |
Things really “greened up” this week on our Longwood Reimagined site! We planted three Atlas cedars (Cedrus atlantica) adjacent to our new 1906 restaurant and Fountain Room event space. These three trees join more than 30 existing Atlas cedars throughout our Gardens. Currently measuring 25-30 feet tall, the trees are slower-growing but will eventually reach 40-60 feet in height with wide-spreading, graceful branches. We are also installing nearly 43,000 square feet of sod on the Conservatory Overlook and outside of the new 1906 restaurant and Fountain Room event space. In the months ahead, a series of courtyard gardens will emerge around the new West Conservatory and The Grove administration building that will include 300 trees, 670 shrubs, and some 10,000 perennials! We can’t wait to share these beautiful new spaces with you in fall 2024.

Spring-Flowering Bulb Plantings |
Even though it’s autumn here in the Gardens, we’re already getting ready for spring—which means that we’ll soon be planting bulbs in preparation for next year’s spring display. Fall is the time to plant these spring-flowering bulbs so they can grow roots into winter, and then sprout and bloom in the spring—bringing with them much-welcome color after the winter season. We’ll be planting approximately 150,000 bulbs for next year’s spring display this month in such areas as our Flower Garden Walk and Flower Garden Drive … and we invite you to do the same at home! Learn more about fall bulb planting on our blog.
