Dear Members of the Charleston Jewish Community,

We are writing to share an important update and to reaffirm our confidence in Addlestone Hebrew Academy’s future.

The Board has accepted Rabbi Perton’s resignation from Addlestone Hebrew Academy. Rabbi Perton has chosen to step down this summer in order to care for his mother as she battles cancer. We wish his mother strength and peace during this difficult time. The community thanks Rabbi Perton for his commitment to the school and wishes him and his family well during this time.

For 70 years, the Charleston Jewish community has entrusted Addlestone Hebrew Academy to educate, nurture and guide its children as they develop into knowledgeable, compassionate, and engaged members of our community. The results have been superlative.  That trust is both an honor and a profound responsibility—one that extends far beyond academics. Families entrust us with helping shape their children’s character, Jewish identity, values, and love of learning. We recognize that trust must be earned every day through excellence, transparency, care, and an unwavering commitment to each student’s growth and well-being.

As we optimistically look to the future, we are focused not only on maintaining that trust, but on strengthening and expanding it for generations to come. Particularly after the events of October 7, we stand at a transformative moment which presents an opportunity to build upon the strong foundation established over seven decades with renewed vision, purpose, and accountability. Addlestone Hebrew Academy is moving forward with clarity and confidence, guided by our commitment to academic excellence, meaningful Jewish engagement, and the deep relationships that make our community strong. We remain dedicated to ensuring that every family continues to feel confident in the education, values, and care their children receive at Addlestone.

Our Board adopted a path forward earlier this year.  The community’s reaction to this path has been overwhelmingly encouraging.  We have made substantial progress and have the leadership in place to support the school's future:
  • Our Board is more engaged than ever, providing focused governance and strategic direction for the school.

  • Our new Chief Operating Officer, Mark Blaylock, has strengthened our financial position and continues to guide operations with professionalism, discipline and vision.

  • We have launched a Head of School Search Committee and are actively seeking an exceptional leader who will build upon Addlestone’s strengths, recognize where we can improve, inspire confidence across our community, and guide the school into its next chapter.
Together, we will build on the trust that generations of families have placed in Addlestone Hebrew Academy and ensure a vibrant, thriving future for our school and community.

With appreciation and optimism,
Morris Ellison
