This year's International Great ShakeOut day is October 16, when millions of people worldwide will participate in earthquake drills at work, school and home!
At 10:16 a.m. (local time), you can join millions of people across Washington practicing earthquake safety. While we encourage you to participate with everyone, you can register your school for the Great ShakeOut drill for any day of the year, and drill at a time of your choice.
If you school lies in an tsunami zone, the Great ShakeOut is also a great time to practice your tsunami evacuation routes. You can learn more about tsunami preparedness at TsnumaniZone.org
Please note: At approximately 10:16 on 10/16, all coastal and inner coastal sirens will be set off with the “wailing” sound (not the test message).
The MyShake app will send a practice test alert to anyone who has downloaded the MyShake App between 10:15 and 10:20 a.m. on 10/16 for the Great ShakeOut drill. This will be a test.
No other ShakeAlert systems will test their alerting at this time, but those systems (Android and Wireless Emergency Alerts) will still work to send alerts during earthquake shaking.

Introduction TAPS - Threat Assessment Power Series |
The NWESD School Safety and Wellness Center (SSWC) is excited to announce the launch of a new learning tool designed with busy educators in mind: the Threat Assessment Power Series, or TAPS 10.
TAPS 10 delivers quick, practical insights into school-based threat assessment through a series of 10-minute videos. Each episode focuses on strategies and tips to help renew threat managers’ confidence and awareness in this critical area of school safety.
These bite-sized sessions are not intended to replace comprehensive training. For full threat assessment training opportunities, please contact the SSWC directly.
As fellow educators, we understand the demands on your time and the importance of maintaining high-quality behavioral threat management practices. That’s why we’ve created this flexible, on-demand resource—so you can stay sharp without adding extra weight to your schedule.
TAPS 10 videos will be updated regularly, giving you fresh opportunities to sharpen your skills and support safe, healthy school communities.
TAPS 10 videos may be accessed on the SSWC RESOURCES (Google Sites) page, or on the SSWC’s YouTube Channel.
Stay tuned, and enjoy learning with TAPS 10!

Agents from Homeland Security and Analysts from the FBI will share the risks youth face from online exploitation, NVE and gore groups, sextortion, human trafficking, and grooming, and how these threats impact school safety.
|
This training will address the growing risks youth face from NVE (Non-Violent Extremism), gore groups, sextortion, human trafficking, and grooming/child exploitation in online and gaming spaces. Participants will gain an understanding of what these groups are, how they operate, and the tactics they use to recruit and exploit young people.
The seminar will explore:
|
- How youth are exposed to and drawn into these groups.
- The behaviors, indicators, and warning signs that a child may be involved.
- What these groups demand of youth and the dangers they present.
- Practical strategies to protect youth and strengthen community safeguards.
- Groups and people who can support youth and communities in prevention and intervention efforts.
|
By the end of the training, participants will be better equipped to recognize risks, identify warning signs, connect with resources, and implement protective measures to keep young people and communities safe.

October 28 | Online | Sex Trafficking Awareness & Prevention with an Intro to the Yes! Mapping Program |
Sex Trafficking Awareness & Prevention with an Introduction to the YES! Program RCW 28A.320.168. Presented by Laurie Dils | OSPI
|
The YES! program, empowers students to initiate change in their school by analyzing the school environment and sharing their perspectives. It includes a hotspot bullying mapping project for middle schools. Additionally, we will discuss sex trafficking awareness and prevention instruction designed to fulfill the requirements of RCW 28A.320.168, which requires schools to:
”Beginning no later than the 2025-26 school year, school districts must offer instruction in sex trafficking awareness and prevention. The instruction may be offered beginning in grade seven, but each student must be provided the instruction at least once before completing grade 12.”
This training aims to eliminate barriers by empowering students to identify and report areas within the school that feel unsafe, and to recognize signs that someone may be experiencing trafficking or sextortion. Equipped with this information, school staff will be better positioned to monitor high-risk areas and proactively safeguard students from potential harm.
