Supporting Veterans in the Criminal Justice System
Part 2: Responding to Co-occurring Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorder
August 22, 2023, 2:30–4:00 p.m. ET
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) are often co-occurring within the Veteran population. Up to 75 percent of Veterans with an SUD also have PTSD, and 20-30 percent of Veterans with PTSD have a comorbid SUD. To reduce the risk of recidivism and to support long-term recovery in Veterans with justice involvement, it is crucial that treatment courts know how to identify and respond to their unique needs.
In Part 2 of this webinar series, speakers from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will discuss the relationship between PTSD and SUD among Veterans and VA’s approach to addressing these disorders. Attendees will be provided information and strategies that treatment courts can use to identify co-occurring disorders among Veterans with justice involvement and develop targeted approaches to support these needs.
