Combating a threat to the global supply of chocolate

A rapidly spreading virus threatens the health of the cacao tree and the dried seeds from which chocolate is made, jeopardizing the global supply of the world’s most popular treat. Benito Chen-Charpentier, professor of mathematics, has helped determine planting methods that will prevent the spread of the virus.

Eye-opener

In a new study, Matthew Robison, assistant professor of psychology, and doctoral student Lauren D. Garner reported that a person’s pupils dilate when they are concentrating on tasks. In particular, they found that the more a person’s eyes dilated during the task, the better they did on tests measuring their working memory.

Bestselling author Julissa Natzely Arce Raya took the podium at the annual Center for Mexican American Studies Distinguished Lecture to talk about the collective experiences of Mexican Americans. In her lecture “Reclaiming Our Latino History and Heritage,” she weaved together her personal story with the larger story of Latino culture and history.

Total Solar Eclipse Digital Collection

Donate digital eclipse materials

UTA Libraries Special Collections is seeking community donations of digital materials documenting the total solar eclipse that occurred on April 8. Community members are invited to make donations through the Total Solar Eclipse Collection donation form. Items of interest include digital photographs, videos, artwork, and more relating to the eclipse, celebrations, and gatherings in North Texas. 

Stacy Shelton receives advisor of the year award

Leadership Recognition Ceremony

Student organizations, student leaders, and advisors were recently recognized at the annual Leadership Recognition Ceremony hosted by the Follett Student Leadership Center. Stacy Shelton, a staff member in the Center for Research and Scholarship in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, won Advisor of the Year Award. The Jeff Sorensen Endowed Scholarship and Award went to Laura Sonko, a senior nursing major, and the Dr. Wayne Duke Endowed Scholarship and Award went to Aastha Arora, a junior psychology major. Share your priorities for climate action measures

The Office of Sustainability is advancing the Campus Master Plan and the Energy Transition and Resilience Plan. You can provide feedback on the goals outlined in both plans at an open house event Tuesday, April 30, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in the Red River and Concho rooms in the University Center. Take the Energy Transition and Resilience Plan Survey to communicate your priorities as they relate to sustainability, resilience, and climate action measures.

Spring Forward Challenge

Beginning Wednesday, May 1, UTA’s online campus map for mobile devices and websites will be updated. It will be unavailable in Internet Explorer and older browser versions of Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.

The impact of couples counseling

Ashish Sedai, assistant professor in economics, conducted a study that shows that married women in patriarchal societies become more socially and financially independent when they participate in counseling with their spouses aimed at breaking gender norms. Men in these relationships find new respect for their partners and take on more household roles, allowing for better communication and a gain in overall household employment and income, the research indicates.

Global Seal of Biliteracy

Global Seal of Biliteracy

UTA students who speak a language in addition to English can test their proficiency to receive the Global Seal of Biliteracy, a microcredential that conveys language proficiency. The test is offered in more than 40 languages through the Department of Modern Languages. Email proficiency@uta.edu for more information.

Learn about the Maverick Advantage at boot camp

As part of a grant from the Lemelson Foundation and the Engineering for One Planet initiative, the Center for Research on Teaching and Learning Excellence and the Office of Sustainability are sponsoring a two-day boot camp for faculty to learn about how to utilize the Maverick Advantage to integrate sustainability into their courses. Faculty will receive $500 for completing the boot camp. The sessions will be held in Trinity Hall, Room 105 on Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. each day with lunch provided.
