It’s not often that we enter a university already knowing who we are, who we want to become, or where we’re headed. Some of us discover ourselves and new passions as the semesters come and go, while others begin to see the bigger picture from a single class. And then some arrive knowing exactly what they want and how to get there. No path is better than another, and every route we take shapes us, making our stories that much more unique.
Aaron McAnelly, DPT ’17, entered his university journey with a clear vision. His goal was to excel academically while gaining a deep understanding of the physical therapy profession, laying the foundation he’d need to step into the field with confidence one day. And like any hopeful student beginning his college journey, he also hoped to form a few lasting friendships along the way.
McAnelly explored multiple physical therapy programs before choosing UIW. He was particularly drawn to UIW’s problem‑based learning model, which he believed offered a superior approach, one that would better prepare him for real‑world clinical practice and decision‑making.
During his time at UIW, McAnelly recalls the friendships built through countless hours of studying together and how much he valued those moments and the people who shared them with him. Those are the experiences that made the rigor of PT school both manageable and meaningful. One of his favorite memories was participating in the Physical Therapy Olympics, a weekend event where PT programs from across Texas competed in athletic challenges at UT Health Science Center. During his second year, McAnelly and his teammates secured a victory, making the experience especially memorable.
McAnelly graduated with his Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2017 and is now the proud owner of Revival Performance Physical Therapy in San Antonio, an outpatient clinic that prioritizes exceptional care over patient volume. Today, Revival Performance Physical Therapy challenges the high‑volume status quo and empowers both patients and therapists to help redefine what physical therapy can and should be. McAnelly credits the education he received and the professional connections he formed at UIW as important stepping stones that led him to where he is today.
Outside of work, McAnelly embraces the constant growth and learning that comes with being the father of two daughters. When he’s not spending time with his family, he enjoys staying involved in his local church and is continually refining systems and processes that help strengthen and advance his business.
To future physical therapy students, McAnelly encourages investing heavily in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, noting that these subjects form the foundation that will help you reason through nearly any clinical challenge. To current students, he emphasizes the importance of hard work while also reminding them not to take these years for granted. Build meaningful relationships, and allow yourself to enjoy the journey.
