For nearly 40 years, the Duke University Medical Center’s Hospital School has provided academic instruction and emotional support for young patients from preschool through 12th grade. Operated in partnership with Durham Public Schools, the program helps children continue their studies and maintain ties to their home schools while receiving care.

Using Electrical Bursts to Get the Gut Moving

Duke engineers have developed a new nerve-stimulation approach that could offer meaningful relief for people living with chronic constipation, a condition that affects millions and often lacks effective treatment options. Early studies show the technique can help restore healthy gut motion, offering a promising path for patients whose symptoms disrupt daily life. The innovation has already been licensed, paving the way for faster translation into care using devices that many patients already rely on. Researchers hope the approach will expand treatment choices and improve the quality of life for people with persistent gastrointestinal challenges.

Reimagining the Veteran Journey

Duke’s Veteran Transitions Research Lab (VTRL) is establishing the scientific foundation necessary to support veterans in successfully transitioning from military service to civilian careers--a transition that often results in underemployment despite possessing strong skills and experience. Led by Fuqua professor Aaron Kay, the lab studies the social, psychological and workplace barriers veterans face. Current projects explore how growth mindsets can improve job searches, why military rank-based thinking can clash with civilian norms and how employers can better support veteran success.
